SOURCE: failsafe engine mode

The failsafe mode can appear following numerous faults being detected - some faults can be momentary and register but not cause a problem. These are normally reset by just turning ignition off/on. get the fault code memory read at a garage and this may give you a clue as to a possible problem developing. Failsafe mode will give you reduced engine performance but will allow you to drive for normally some distance. If a serious problem developes your car message centre will tell you to shut off the engine or it will shut it down.
good luck.

SOURCE: failsafe engine mode light comes on, codes

Just a quick mention - for about a month my XK8 low coolant light came on intermittently. This week with no notice while driving normally I got Stability Control Fail and FailSafe Engine Mode and wtih great difficulty got the car back to where I started from (less than a mile). Two days later (when got time) and after a bit of research, I tried it again - same problem and a very unhappy engine. I then disconnected the battery for 15 minutes (probably more) to clear the engine codes as well as check all the wiring and vacuum stuff I could under the hood (at a Jaguar master mechanic's recommendation). No problems found but the car would start and immediately stall with the air intake hose disconnected from the intake butterfly. After I reconnected the air intake hose, she started and purred like normal. The problem is the BATTERY... It is low - I've known it for a LONG time BUT it always started right up and never skipped a beat. I intend to replace it tonight but fully expect that's the issue. I've had the car 6 years (it's a 98) and had NO problems except a dead taillight asembly.

Hope this is of value...

SOURCE: 2000 S TYPE Jaguar

This happens when the communication between the computers of the car systems fails:the connection is lost for a moment , which sends the engine and transmission in Failsafe mode; if you turn off the contact the computers reset and when you start it again they test the status of the connection before reengaging - they detects that the connection is fine and resume normal functioning. In the case of my Citroen it was between the engine and transmission computers - a cable connector has been damaged by a rock.
The only way to locate the origin of this problem is to check and reseat every single connector on the wiring loom.

Engine Failsafe Mode is activated

It may be if you ignore the light. Check the oil level and coolant levels first if ok have the fault codes read to determine the sensor that put the light on. Repair it and go from there.. Normally the ECM goes into safe mode to protect the engine and gear box from serious damage but it depends on the driver to react promptly to stop further damage occurring.

My 2001 chrysler sebring will not shift out of 1st gear

The fault code P1684 means that power to your powertrain control module (PCM) was interrupted. The most common cause of this is because of a weak battery. When the car is stated, the voltage drops low enough that it cuts power to the PCM for just a brief moment, which will set the fault. It can also be caused by a wiring issue to the PCM, or a bad connection in the battery cable. It may or may not cause issues with drivability. The fault should be thoroughly diagnosed by a qualified technician

What the P0700 code means. P0700 is set when the PCM detects a malfunction in the transmission control system. This malfunction causes the vehicle to set a Check Engine Light and trigger a failsafe mode. Once the failsafe mode is set it will remain until the fault is repaired or normal operation is detected
