99 jetta check engine light on, runs fine, speedometer not workin

I've had it in the garage several times and have had the computer codes read and the following items already replaced: crank shaft sensor battery fuse box and battery power wire EVAP purge solenoid Oil Pressure switch
The car will go 2-3 weeks between the light coming back on and appears to run fine but this latest time the speedometer/odometer stops working after driving for about 20 mins and then comes-and-goes. Any ideas?

O2 sensors will put your check-engine-light on. it is attached to the exhaust (closest to the motor)and rusts-out sometimes. you could try to fix it by buying the o2 sensor and use a socket-set to see if it loosens. i 'm not a mechanic but have had the issue, in the past, with the jetta II's and a 1997.the guys at vw dealers are great with info, if your a hands-on kinda guy/girl.

I took the speedometer cluster out and drove the car while applying pressure on the top plug and it worked so I then took a tooth pick and wedged between the plug and where it plugs in this has fixed the problem. so I believe the problem on most speedometers is bad plug in back of cluster

The majority of the time my speedometer stops working, and my ABS brake light and check engine light come on and stay on, but the car drives fine, but could be the problem it's a 99 so 95

99 or 95??? Most car parts stores will read your codes for free. Once you have the code definitions, then you can locate your problems. Most likely speed sensor and ABS sensor on one of the wheels.

Why would my check engine light come on and speedometer stop working at the same time on my 99 dodge stratus?

there is a code set in the pcm(computer). it could be a problem with the vehicle speed sensor(VSS) that would cause the speedometer to stop working turning on the check engine light to get things checked out.

I have a 2000 Jetta TDI and the yellow "check" light stays on all the time. It has been on for several years. Garages can't tell me what is wrong. The car runs fine.

When Check Engine Light ( CEL ) turn on, you need to have the codes read. Some places will read them for FREE. There are some other threads in this Forum that recommend to go to Autozone (or another parts store) where they will provide you a code reading free of charge. Get the exact code (like P0XXX) not just their and post it back here.

In THIS LINK could find additional interesting information about TDI FAQ.

Regarding warning lights:
- if the coolant temp light comes on, shut off the engine ASAP
- if the oil warning light comes on, shut off the engine ASAP
- if a falshign MIL/CEL comes on, shut off the engine ASAP

ASAP means driving to the berm of the highway right now and not waiting for the next exit. But if the MIL/CEL is not flashing, then it's not an urgent indicator.

Its possible that one simple unplug or any bad signal sensor. Are you recently make any mechanical job there?

Keep us updated.

Yellow engine warning light on 02 TDI Jetta

You should get the OBD codes read. This should pinpoint the problem. This light is connected to an emmissions problem. Re setting it will do nothing as it will come back on as soon as the on-board computer re=booths. As you dont have a loss of power,it sounds very like one of the lamda units is faulty, but do the code reading to be sure.
Best of luck with it

1999 vw jetta vr6 abs light stays on, but brakes work fine

the only way you will find this out is to have a diagnostic machine plugged in and the fault memory read to check what fault is logged, it could be anything from a ABS wheel speed sensor to a control module fault, to save money in the long run i would advise you get the fault memory read first. hope this helps

Check engine light stays on

the engine check light is telling you that there is a fault with a sensor on your engine

you need to go to a garage to have the fault codes read from your computer

even though your car is running fine its a matter of time before it plays up
