Just adjust the cable or you can adjust the spring of the fuel lid.

The gas lid will not open. I hit the switch but it will not open.

there should also be a cable inside the car near the tank that acts as a manual release-open the back up and look for a small cable in the same area as the filler. You may also have a blown fuse that is keeping the door opener from actuation.

Gas lid switch doesn't work.

You will either find an emergency release inside the trunk behind the liner, or the release lever will twist allowing the gas lid to spring open. You will then need to figure out the reason that the swith doesn't work.

Rear lid wont lock

There's no easy solution. Assuming you have a keyless remote and that isn't doing the job. The key in the trunk lid must not be working either. There is a way to crawl through the back seat and manually open the trunk lid, but that's a less than hospitable solution (especially if you have items in your trunk. I've changed the actuator in my daughter's 1998 beetle, and it's not an impossible repair for a novice. Sometimes it's a bad actuator, other times the actuator simply needs to be re-aligned so that operate properly. Dealer cost to do the repair will likely be about $150.

Bottom line, no easy manual solution to the problem, sorry.

Rear trunk lid wont close

There's an electronic actuator inside the trunk door. The actuator opens the trunk lid when you press either the remote keyless entry or the inside trunk release. If the electronic actuator fails it usually fails in the trunk open mode which will not allow you to close the trunk lid. You can either remove the actuator and take the car to the VW dealer, or buy a new actuator and replace it yourself. It's a tough fix, but not impossible for the mechanically inclined.

Unable to open the fuel door on 2002 VW Beetle!!! Any suggestions? Thanks

The cause will be the cable that links the actuator to the flap is siezed. If you hook your fingers under the edge of the flap that pops up you can bend the flap (its plastic) so it clears the catch and it opens.it a fairly common problem.to replace it you need to remove several trims on the right hand side.Back panel ,lower c post upper c post and the rear headlining trim.they hook behind eachother so to remove one you have to remove another etc.hope this helps.Ocasionally the actuator itself fails so check it moves once the cable is disconected from it by operating fuel flap switch.cheers

1998 Volkswagen Beetle, gas lid

It may be a actuator or cable at the lid that failed.

Emergency latch for gas cap 2000 VW Beetle, where is it?

From the manual:
  • Open the rear lid.
  • Open the cover on the backside of the luggage compartment. To open the cover, turn the two "quick-releases" and fold the cover down.
  • Reach through the opening by the fuel filler flap. Grab the cable with th plastic covering and pull down. The filler flap will open by itself.
Best of luck!

Electrical problems with trunk gas door and ac

the first problem with you fuel door is most likely the rear actuating motor or cable. remove the right rear trunk lining, and loosen the 2 silver phillips head screws, and remove the actuating motor. i would suggest replacing both the motor and the cable, as both of these parts have superceeded to a new improved part. the AC problem is caused by a faulty fan control unit. this part not only receives the switch signal and processes the information to control the compressor, but also controls the fans, their speed, the compressor, and the hi/lo pressure switch. both of these parts a a common problem for the beetle.
