Could be a bad turbo. Is the car running fine besides? Mine would run fine until I had to use some boost then it ran like poo and had no power. Pick up a used or rebuilt turbo and do it your self. Its easy. You may want to change the O2 sensors, sparkplugs and clean the MAF, throttle body, after you replaced the turbo to get everything clean again. Unplug the battery for 15min to reset the ECU as well.

Sounds like you might have blown a ring on a piston. and the black smoke is oil being burned...find out what the engine code is....but a blown ring usually requires an engine rebuild to fix. Hope this helps.....sorry about the bad news

Also check the O2 Sensor on the Catalytic converter. its a cheaper fix but most of all find out what the engine code says...it will direct you to what needs fixing better than anyone here can. Hope this helps a little more.

Oil light comes on, loses power, stalls, restarts but engine very rough, oil level is fine but oil is very hot, smokes

Check for trouble codes. Smoke out where? out the exhaust? Do a compression test to check internal mechanical condition. Low compression would likely mean expensive engine repairs, no easy fixes. If the oil light comes on well before the engine loses power, have the oil pressure tested on a gauge. Low oil pressure could be a bad oil pump, worn crankshaft bearings, or a blockage in the oil passages throughout the engine, or a clogged pick-up tube and screen in the crankcase. How long do you want to keep whipping that achieva, Mark? Might be time to look for another pony !

Is there any easy way to tell if head gasket is blown on 99 saab 9-3 2.0 turbo? Or an easy way to do a compression check?

Yes you use an exhaust gas analyzer to check for hydrocarbons in coolant recovery tank or radiator.

Black smoke from exhaust, rough idle, black soot on plugs

signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator-- the vehicle will run rough, the engine will not start ( usually in the mornings,) many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. replacement is only cure. 1- black soot on plugs-2-black smoke from tailpipe-3- running rough-4- stalling, good-day! repost if need be.

coolant tempurature sensor may be bad. (if it is bad it will run to rich, run rough at idle, and produce black smoke. engine may stall out.

My car is idling low, stalling and having trouble starting

You might want to try replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Saab 93's and 95's are notorious for these faulty sensors. they don't cost much, mine cost around $55 with tax and it took me around 1 hour to replace. Go to this website: www.fixmysaab.com then search for 95_repair. They show you how to replace the sensor. They even include pictures and the tools you will need(only a long ratchet with a swivel attachment). Try this before taking it to a dealership as they will mostly likely charge you app $400 plus for less than an hours work! I hope this helps 8)

Peace and happy driving 8)
