My hyundai runs well on flat roads but as soon as it start to go uphill the compression goes down which leads toemission of white smoke
Could be a weak head gasket. White smoke is usually coolant burning.

"Loss in power" usually means that the combustion chamber in your cars engine is full of carbon. That is left behind because of the unburned fuel. With that type of problem, fuel responses will be slower, poor acceleration, lower rpm, etc. You may overhaul your engine for them to clean the carbon manually, but it'll be expensive and could lead to "loose compression". That means the engine won't be as powerful or responsive as before.
The best way would be to have a carbon ridding solution injected into the engine. The solution will liquify the carbon and other build-ups, which would then restore the "power" of your car. You'll get better acceleration, higher rpm and top speed, etc. have a mechanic do it for you. It's alot cheaper and faster than having the engined overhauled.

Hi willie what you might want to try is pluse generators. these sensors send signal of the input and output speed of your trans and cause the trans to not shift from 2nd to 3rd and sometimes overrdrive. The 99 00 elantras are known to do this due to these sensors not working. hope i was a help.

White smoke or semi white can be produced in several ways. One way is
oil this is normally a whitish blue to blue smoke and has the apparent
smell of oil being burned. Next could be antifreeze when it is being
burned it has a sweet type of smell and tends to dissipate in the air
rather quickly and usually is because of a bad head gasket. Next is automatic transmission fluid which is normally
found on automatic transmissions and its normally drawn into an engine
thru a vacuum line via a defective transmission modulator valve or some
other defective part. Transmission fluid is very apparent and billows
out so bad that you can't see anything behind you. Last but not least
another type of smoke that is not white but black is the presents of to
much gas/fuel being burned in the engine. If one of these fluids is low and/or you notice one of the symptoms that I pointed out above, then you know where to start looking for a fix.
I would also check your oil for discoloration. If it is a brownish color it
could mean your oil and antifreeze are mixing and has the potential to
damage your bearings.

To pin point a blowing headgasket you will need
1)coolant system compression tester
or
2)chemical reaction test for combustion test gas
If it's the org. engine from 1998,with over 120,000 then blown headgasket is a good possiblity.
Tow it to the shop and let the pro to do the coolant pressure test and combustion gas test.
A full head gasket job with head re-surface (if it can be re-use) is worth it.
Shop around on well estiblished independent shops.
