My fuel guage will not move off of empty. I never know how much fuel I have in my truck. What causes the guage to not read?
Click on the link, this site has some info. I sometimes use a couple of resistors, one represents empty and the other represents full, use the resistor between the two terminals for sending unit, key on, see if gage reacts properly to each resistor, if it does, the problem is the sending unit in the gas tank or the electrical connector. It the gage still doesn't react proper, either wiring circuit problem or maybe the gage is faulty.

The wire to the sender in the fuel tank is shorted. If it was open or disconnected it would read full.

Ajkill is right. I had the same problem with the fuel light always being on and the guage read empty no matter how much fuel is in the tank. I had to have the fuel level sensor in the tank replaced. This is something that they have to drop the tank for. It was about $400 with the part and labor at the dealership.

this problem is caused by a defective fuel gauge sending unit in the fuel tank.

You will have to have the dealer reset the security light to restart vehicle.Check all engine and chassie grounds because this is where the lighting would exit the vehicle. It sounds like a ground burnt through.

I had this problem as well. Took it to the garage and it was a $700 bill the part alone was $440 they had to drop the gas tank - and since then it's not been working right. The fan clutch went a week later another $700 bill. Picked it up and it was still making the same sound - garage replaced another sensor without charging me--picked it up and three days later the service engine light came on. Back to garage and another $80 part was needed under the hood. All this with just 52,500 miles and I keep it well maintained. Not a happy camper at all! Holding my breath but it's been only two days so far so good.

The gas tank sending unit has a float on it to register the amount of gas in the tank. The float is probably faulty which will cause erratic readings and is a fairly common issue with some GM units. Replacement of the sending unit should resolve that issue. As far as the coolant temperature gauge, it could be a faulty temperature sending unit or a thermostat that is stuck open or someone removed the thermostat. This will cause the engine to never reach operating temperature which in turn makes the engine run rich and can clog cat. converters and destroy some sensors.

It must be really frustrating not knowing how much fuel is in your truck! My Subaru has a similar problem, except the gauge plummets to empty after it hits halfway, even though I can keep driving for a couple of hundred miles. I'm not sure about you, but I think I'll take my Subaru to a mechanic to see if they can fix the gauge. http://www.danics.com.au/
