I would take it back to the mechanic that replaced the gasket. It could have not been torqued down evenly and blew again.

It sounds like you may have a problem feeding the fuel to your engine, I had the same problem with my 89 RS. All the 1989 model's fuel systems were recalled. I think you may need a new fuel pump. The fuel pump is located inside the gas tank in the rear of the car right under the rear axle. The fuel pump itself isn't too expensive, but with other small parts such as the electrical harness upgrade and fuel filter and the labor you should be looking somewhere in the $500 range. I have the same car. So far no problems with the Transmision. I had the Trans oil change out every 60 K
Sure sounds like you need to get the Transmision checked. Is the fault light on. I have invested ina fault code reader sure is worth it.

It's hard to diagnose with just the small information you have stated, but it 'sounds' like it's that Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve gasket.
In your cylinder head is a runner that brings exhaust gas up through the intake manifold.
The EGR valve is attached to the intake manifold, and the sensory part of the EGR valve sits down in the pathway of the runner.
A bad EGR valve gasket will let exhaust gasses escape, making the sound you described.

sealers usually end up costing you more in the long term than the short term. these sealers react to heat and air. so you end up doing nothing more than plugging up you radiator, water passage ports, water pumps get damaged. causing more over heating problems than they solve. no i would go for what the shop gave you as a quote. that seems a pretty reasonable quote for the position you are in.
