When heat is turned on there is a foul odor that comes out of vents. There is little to no odor when the heat is off and the A/C is running.
Sounds like a mouse nest in hvac system, no smell because when using ac it doesn't use outside air, probably a nest on the screen at the hvac air intake or if you have a a cabin air filter check in there. many times rodents make nests have babies and then the car moves and they cannot feed the babies and so they die and rot smell comes into car. usually it is not hard to access because there should be a screen between the outside and inside under the cowl cover, if no screen and the little buggers vot into your hvac duct system this could be a much bigger problem entailing removal of dash completely. most likely this isn't the case, good luck

SOURCE: heater fan not working
blower motor relay is what it sounds like. If you change fan speeds does it start to run or is it dead?If it is dead it is either blower motor relay or fan motor. it is not very often that these things go out but whenthey do it is usually without warning.
SOURCE: White smoke-like stuff comes out of heater vent of my car.
sharp acidic smell would be electrical
sweet smell would be coolant.

SOURCE: BMW E35 95, no heat coming thru vents
My guess is the heater matrix is blocked, check the feed and return hoses for heat after a few minutes running.
There is no cure for a blocked matrix only replacement. The hot water passes through only a part of the matrix and when you put the blower on there is no capacity to heat the air. Do not run any vehicle without coolant/antifreeze unless in emergency. This will cause the heater then the rad to quickly block.
Most vehicles running an aluminium matrix will clog within 4-5 years and 75-80 thousand miles, its common as day here in europe.
