Don't forget the brake light fuse.
You can check the switch by pressing it manually while someone watches for the brake light to come on. Also the brake light has 2 filaments on some cars. Be sure to check the bulb for both filaments.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2000 Ford Expedition-Left turn signal and brake

You may have some wiring 'grounding' problems in the areas of concern. Remove each connection, and clean any rust. Place a light film of grease and a fresh star washer next to ground point, then the wire connector and other washers. Tighten firmly. Check the lamp sockets for any corrosion and replace same if found. The front lamp flashes rapidly because the rear light not working causes the flasher unit to switch faster.

1999 dodge Dakota. No rear brake or turn signals. Front signals are good. 3rd brake light good. Rear running lights are good. Just rear turn and brake on both sides. Replaced flasher relay no change. ...

The lower brake lites are wired through the multifunction switch. The high-mount stop lamp is wired differently. Stop and turn at the rear use the same bulb filament, just not at the same time. See the D and E at top, that is voltage for either stop or turn. The black wire from bottom of lamp should be ground.

When I start car taillights come on but no brake lights or third light in window

Well your parking lights should not come on when you start the car unless you have turned on light switch. Most cars you must step on the brake to start, so the brake lights would be on. Your problem maybe a burnt out bulb on rear window lite.

TEST: have someone watch the rest and push on brakes see what lights. If 2 tail lite then its blub.
If non light its the fuse in box underdash.
Now take foot off brake and turn on lights and emergency flashers walk around check all lights then step on brake and see if brakes light up.

Replace bulbs or fuses as needed.

Hope this helps Mike

I have a 92 Buick roadmaster. How do i get my brake lights to work on the rear of my car? The light in the window works fine including all the rest of my lights. I've changed the brakes switch and bulbs...

The lower brake lamps are wired through the turn signal switch. The hi-mount brake lite is wired differently. Do the rear turn signals work? If so, I think the problem is the turn signal switch. Your lower brake lites and turn signal use the same bulb filament, just not at the same time. Just my opinion.

Main brake lights don't work

check fuses first, then brake light switch, underdash, @ brake pedal. note : may need to replace switch, car is 23 years old, try this first.

Brake lights don't work

check all electrical fuses first. the brake switch that is mounted on top of brake pedal arm underdash, may be bad or out of adjustment. this switch sends power to rear stop lights when putting on the brake. if bad there will be no power going to back lights. after fixing switch check the power to stop lights. if still no power check wires and the bulbs.

My brake light is on while driving and my turn signal lights are not coming on

there are several causes, check bulbs first. A crossed filament in a bulb can cause similar problems. The brake & turn use the same filament so if the brake lights are on, due to a bad switch underdash, the turn signals won't work.

I have a 2005 GMC Envoy. Have tail lites but no brake lites. Third lite on top works whet brakes applied

Since the high mounted brake light works you know that the brake light switch is working. Now you need to check the brake light bulbs in the rear tail light assemblies. The brake lights are separate from the tail light (parking or running lights). There are two screws that hold the rear light assemblies in place.

Rear Brake Lights not working, 3rd light is working

check the fuse for the stoplights. Even though the 3rd one is working it should be on a different fuse. With both of them not working even after you changed the bulb it would seem to lead to a fuse.

Brake lights on saab 900 2.3 95 model year

If there is no brake lite switch on the arm of the brake pedal then look to see if there are two wires hanging down with a plug on them, as perhaps the previous owner removed the brake lite switch with the intentions of replacing it and just never got around to it.

1990 Volvo DL Sedan Brake Lites Work but Also Come on With Running Lites

Is there a switch on the left side of the dash that has a red lens and a wavy line across it? If so, you have a rear fog light switch and it has been activated, causing your brake lights to come on each time you turn your headlights on. Flip the switch and the rear lights should display only the parking lights with the headlights on.
