My 96 Jeep cherokee will shut down while I'm driving. Than I pull over and it will start back up with in 15 minutes. I don't think it has spark when down. Could someone tell me where to start. Had engine read the only error was P0138 error codecirciut high voltage bank 1 sensor 2. Could this be causing the problem.

I think you should buy repair manual first for your vehicle after that it will be easy for you to solve the problem. Check the link may be you will find something useful here 2000 grand Jeep Cherokee
Install a new crank shaft sensor. I had the same problem with my wife's Jeep. It would run fine fore days at a time then quit. When the crank sensor goes out their is no spark or injection of fuel into the engine. This is a Hall Sensor. They can be intermittent, and affected bu heat. If your Jeep will not start, try freeing the sensor and see if it starts. Cold Freeze is used in electronics to test
did you replace the ECu with a used one or new. if it a used one did you match it to the old.why di you change the ECU.? when you turn the key in the start position does the fuel pump turn on? does it crank? do you know if there is spark if you pull one spark plug wire?
I have a "96 Grand Cherokee 4.0L myself. I have to admit I'm taking a shot here, I haven't heard of this before. I'm thinking you have a lot of miles just like mine, I've got around 250,000, a little lifter noise and an exhaust rattle but I've never had to do any major engine work on this vehicle.
I think it's most likely blow by (pressure getting past the piston rings) is forcing a little oil or maybe moisture up the distributor shaft. If you drive it accross town the engine warms up completely and the heat and spark burn off the oil or moisture. When you only go a couple of blocks it doesn't heat up enough to dry it out and burn it off.
have the crank sensor replaced this controls the spark and injector pulse it is located on the drivers back side of the engine above the transmission housing!
