Gear shifter I cannot move my gear shifter out of park. I already look at the bracket underneath where the gear shifter cable is attached and it is fine...what other solution can I look at? I went to fill the car and got stuck at the gas station and had to tow it home.

Check that the lock button in the lever is actually unlocking the lever position. Check that the cable is not broken and jammed in the outer case.

SOURCE: my gear shifter won't move

It may be the solenoid is bad or the battery is low. on the plastic plate surrounding the gear lever you will see a screw with a star shaped design, undo this and push a biro down the hole. That will release the lock. you can undo that screw with the correct key avaliable from your local hardware store or a good sized flat bladed driver will also do it.

We have a 2005 GMC Envoy . Wife started the car and went to put in reverse and it felt as shifter slid down all the way to drive ,she put back in park and shut motor off came to get me

Hi. Good description. Thank you for the details. Yes, I do think something broke related to the shifter cable. YOU CARE!!! It may not be in park and could roll. Chalk the wheels and look underneath. The cable may be broken but verify it. Make sure a clip, bushing or mounting bracket isn't to blame. Please write back if you need further information.

1994 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1L V6 DOHC Vehicle cannot be shifted into Park or First Gear. What could be the diagnosis?

If you can't move the shifter into PARK OR FIRST GEAR manually I would say you need to adjust the cable shifter. Try to move the shifter while someone looks at the transmissions cable underhood and see if the cable move normally and not out of the adjustment lock.
1- At the transmission end cable unhooks the cable from the transmission.
2- Try to move the transmission's selector manually from Park to
D1.
3- If you cannot move the selector then your problem is inside the transmissions.
4- If you can move normally the selector then you have to adjust the cable.

1998 gmc 1500 5.7L shifter sticks (auto transmission. ) its a bugger to get out of park, i was thinking the brake sensor (disconected the shifter cable at the tranny)then it shifts fine, and can shift fine...

Shift interlock system problem . Not the cable . Your vehicle has a safety system that won't allow the gear selector to be moved from park without the brake pedal pushed . Lock solenoid keeps gear selector from moving . Trying to force it will break something . Do you know how to test electrical circuits with a volt meter ? Here is a web site for free wiring diagrams http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html
Enter the vehicle info. Year , make , model and engine size. Under system click on transmission / transaxle , then under subsystem click on shift interlock . Click the search button then the blue link. Park neutral switch , brake switch and the shift interlock solenoid , check electrical circuits .

My 2000 ford focus wont shift. Its not the transmission because I can shift it manually a the transmission. Could this be the linkage?

I think your shifter cable broke go back to the linkage at the trans and find the bracket the cable attaches to and try to pull the cable through if you can it broke that's why I think the shifter lever is now all over the place also go to the bottom off the steering column it may have just come loose at the bracket inside the car good luck Adam you'll find it Stephen

My 99 Cougars manual transmission will not go into any gears at all

Check the cable under the gear lever. Look for broken pin or missing pin joining the lever to the cable

When car is in any gear. park, reverse nuetral and drive the gear shifter on dash shows the gear always in PARK

there is a small cable/string attached to the steering column part of the shifter. when you move the shifter it pulls the cable/string, which moves the lever in the cluster on the PRNDL display. basically look carefully at where the shifter base is and you should find the cable/string thing, and reattach it.

2003 Mercury Sable will not move in any of the gears. It went from working perfectly to not moving in forward or reverse. It has 121,000 miles on it.

It sounds like it can be either very cheap or very expensive to fix. If you know a little about cars look under the hood at the transmission which is behind the engine.

The engine should only crank in Park and Neutral. If the engine cranks in any gear the shifter is not attached to the cable anymore. The shifter or cable is broken.

You should see something like a shift cable attached to a stem coming out the transmission. You need to determine if the cable moves or rods move. You may need to look under the floor shift too! If either end is not moving when the shifter is moving, then you just need a shift cable.

However, if the transmission levers are moving and the engine cranks only in Park or Neutral then it is the transmission.

Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline

ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!
