First, try smacking the hood at one of the front corners while someone else pulls the release handle. or even after you've pulled on it. if that works, once open, adjust and lubricate the hood latch assembly. if it still won't open, and it's the cable and not the latch you'll have to replace it anyway, so instead of removing the grill, cut the cable behind the pull lever under the dash where you can reach it. then skin the outer cable insulation away from the actual steel cable exposing an inch or two of it. then holding the insulation and plastic housing with pliers, grab the steel cable itself with pliers and pull it to open the hood. then replace the cable. the further you can reach up under the panel the better your chances of getting past the broken part of the cable and avoid removing the grill. you might also be able to gain access from up under the car if you're lucky.

I think the hood latch cable on my 2001 Pathfinder SE is broken. When I pulled the inside release handle, it was real easy and now does not return to the proper position. How do I open the hood to get at...

if you have the hood latch that is next to the fuel latch then all you have to do is look up under where the cable is and see if it is broken there or at the hood latch. If it is there then just pull back to the rear of the suv with a pair if piers slowly that should open your hood. Then go and get a new
cable from the dear or if to high in price then pic-n-pull.

2000 cougar hood cable has broken at the hood, how can I open it

You may be able to get underneath the front bumper enough to where you can see the latch. If you can see the latch you may be able to pull on the linkages enough to pop the hood. I used a coathanger on my old car to pull the wire that ran from the latch itself to the actuator where the wire from inside the cabin ran. I hope this helped. answer back if you need clarification.

My hood latch is broken on my 2001 Subaru Outback. How do I manually opent the hood? I think my problem is the same. I have a 1997 Legacy--when I pop the hood, it releases, but I can't located the latch...

If the cable link to the latch is rusty or broken you have to take the front grid down. It's relatively easy. It's held there by plastic fasteners. Then reach for the latch with you hand, or the leftover broken cable. Pull it, it should release the first latch, than you just have to get to the security latch, like you usually do to open the hood.

find the cable that is supposed to attach to the latch, and grab it with a pair of pliers or the like and pull.
