Hello Scott, I would say you have connected to the brake light wire. I connected my back up camera to the tail light wire. I turn on my headlights to view the back up camera.

Try and clean the camera lense. Make sure there isn't anything blocking the camera.

Buy an aftermarket, wireless back-up camera. Wire the camera to your back-up lights and mount the display somewhere on your dash that allows you comfortable viewing without blocking other essential controls or HVAC vents.

There should be a good diagram in the wiring schematics that came with the camera. Follow the installation directions

First, your ML's COMAND head MUST be pre-installed to back up camera. Check with a voltmeter the plugs no. 1 and 7 in the back of the COMAND, they must have power. If not, you'll need a COMAND head with back up camera option.
If yes, you are free to buy a MB back up camera, install and plug and have a dealer encode your MOST fiber ring to let the car know you are using a BUC.
If you plan to use an after market BUC, like Pioneer's, you'll need to buy an adaptor. Expensive tho.
