The tilt steering works up and down but does not move in and out.

The telescopic steering works moving up and down but not moving in and out. It sounds like gears are grinding but the steering wheel will not move. 2009 Lincoln MKS

Hi, I was just wondering if you actually found out what the problem was & if you resolved it. I have the same car & its doing exactly what you described.

SOURCE: Telescopic Steering wheel won't move down - I hear a gear spinning

Open the gear motor on the left hand side of the telelscopic assembly. Take the plate off held by 4 philips screws. Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolt holding the platic gear. Remove plastic gear and insert the reverse way. Over the years, one side of the gears get worn out.

Yes it would be perfectly ok to disegauge the auto switch to keep it from moving again. It needs a tilt motor replaced . not a easy job.

How do i fix my steering column. it wont stay locked in tilt or side to side

It's just worn out. You can look online or call a dealer to see if you can even find/get parts for it. Best bet is to find a good used column at a salvage yard.

Steering wheel moves up and down

You must take the steering wheel apart and tighten the bolts that hold the tilt joint together, a 4 hour job.

Tilt steering wheel won't tilt. What's wrong?

your steering wheel adjuster is blocked or stuck up thats why it doesnt freely move to the max. take off cover/ check condition and or lubricate it.

My 98 gs300's steering column will telescope but only sometimes tilts. should i replace the tilt motor or is it something else? Thanks

I would begin by getting an aerosol can of WD-40, a penetrating lubricant. Then get down under the steering column and lightly spray the moving parts, and into the joints using the tiny tube that comes with the WD-40.

Steering wheel doesnt move up or down automatically

This happened on my 97 RL.

I cant say for sure with yours, but for mine, the gear for the up/down action somehow broke and developed an inch long gap.

Anyhow, google "acura rl steering column", click on any of the first few links and you will get an idea of what you are working with.

Remove the panel underneath the steering wheel. The motor for the up/down will be right behind that facing down. Unscrew the 4 screws on the panel connecting the motor to the column.

Once the motor is off, check to see if that is the problem (it shouldnt be) simply by using the tilt steering switch. If the motor is fine, check the gear it was just attached to. It will be really greasy, but check to see if the gear is sound.

If it is a broken gear, I unfortunately dont know how to fix it. If more than one person is driving the car (as in my case) you can finagle the motor onto the gear using the tilt switch and you can move the wheel into a happy medium for both parties (using the seat for fine tuning). Once done, and every thing is put back together, disconnect the motor cord cause the wheel will be able to tilt, but will get stuck again once it hits the gap in the gear.
