How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit Looking at a wiring diagram an testing the starter circuit with a DMM - digital multi-meter is the way to find the problem . Free wiring diagram's here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine size. Under system click on engine then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button then the blue link .
Looking at the diagram you will see this starting circuit is computer controlled . Ignition switch is a low voltage input to the BCM - body control module. A message to the ECM - engine computer from the BCM requesting a start over the serial data network (class2) will energize the relay sending B+ voltage to the S terminal on the starter solenoid . Your best bet mite be to have it towed to a qualified repair shop.

SOURCE: saturn ion,sometimes wont start

The problem is in the ignition - the grease gets thick in the cold and doent turn quite right the first time. everything turns on, but the anti theft system thinks you have the wrong key so shuts off pwer to the starter. it takes 8-10 mintues to reset. That is why it normally starts when you come back later. I have had the same problem and done tons of reseach. Right now my temp solution has been a small heater and an extention cord. I keep it plugged in over night on a medium setting - just enough to keep the inside temp above freezing. I am also researching remote starts because saturn dealership charges $250 to replace the ignition, and a remote start will run about $300. Saturn wont do a recall because they feel it is not a safety hazard. I say that is bull. Good luck!

SOURCE: 99 Saturn won't start

Another idea, it may be too late, but maybe for the next problem of this nature. My daughter has a 1999 Saturn SC1. Wouldn't turn over, all lights good, and no headlight dim as I tried to start it. The battery is good (Checked with a meter) the starter works if I jumper the solenoid (Purple wire) to the positive battery.I checked the safety neutral switch (Under the brake resevoir) and it is closed in park. (This is normal) What I discovered is there is a starter relay located just under the left side of the dash cover (Two center screws, and it pulls back and up) This needs a ground. That wire is yellow with a black stripe. If your security system arms for some reason, this ground will go away. Dissconnect your battery for a while, then reconnect, put key in ignition, turn to run, then to start, then back to run, then off. This may reset it. Also check your procedure in the owners manual.

By the way... the starter relay has three other connections, all are yellow wires. One goes out under the hood to eventually become the purple wire that goes to the starter. The other becomes "hot" when turning the key to start. The last also becomes "hot" when turning the ignition key to start, and is fed from the ignition switch itself (Yellow wire)

SOURCE: Saturn SC2 Hot Start Problem

My 1997 SC1 would start fully charged after about 5 minutes of cooling off (same as my Busa). If the vehicle draws lots of bettery energy when the ignition switch is turned (the headlights dim as if the battery was week) and all you her is a "tlock" then more than likely the starter solenoid is sticking when the engine gets hot. Age, as well as wear and tear in the vehicle, would cause for the stater, and the starter solenoid, to weaken. When the engine is cool it will start as if the starter was new, but after driving the car for about 10 minutes the problem starts. The engine running hotter than normal (ie.cooling system problems, diferent muffler system, low oil level), no necesary due to overheating, will add to the problem. My solution was a new stater ($115) and a starter heat wrap ($20), and I never had that problem again :-)

SOURCE: My 2005 Saturn ION (4 cylinders) won't start. With

If the starter cranks but the engine won't start, there could be wide range of problems. Here are some of the most common:
- Problems with fuel delivery system (e.g bad fuel pump, fuel pump relay, clogged fuel screen, etc.)
- Problem with engine electronics (e.g crank sensor, cam sensor, air flow sensor, power relay, engine computer, etc.)
- Ignition system problems, especially on older vehicles with the distributor (e.g bad ignition coil, commutator, rotor, distributor cap, etc.)
- Defective ignition switch
- Problems with vehicle security system
- Internal engine problems (e.g broken timing belt or gear, low compression, etc.)

Make sure that you have fuel in the tank. It may be that your vehicle fuel gauge isn't working properly. The first signs that there is too little fuel in the tank are occasional lugging, loss of power, and a louder, irregular sound of the electric fuel pump coming out from the fuel tank

Where is the starter located on a 2003 saturn ion

It is located about in the middle between the engine and the transmission. Also it is directly below the intake manifold. Hope this helps.

Wont start

is neutral/park relay ok ?(if not it wont allow starter to turn over) check relay first. if it is ok starter could be stuck(its internal brushes collect t deposit from road in time and deposits cause it to stuck when environment get humid (sometimes rusted). try to hit to starter under car with a mid size hammer (short and instant hits)

I have a 06 ion and battery checks good but the car will not turn over at all, not even a click. could this be a bad starter or starter relay?

If only clicked then I'd say bad neutral safety switch but with no click which is a relay then you may have an ignition switch problem. That's in the steering column coming from the key ignition or the starter relay is fried.

Coolant message,n reduced engine power light is on, wont start

Your battery is too weak to turn the starter. The starter takes much more power than the lights or anything else.

We have a 2003 Saturn Ion that has intermittent starting problems. The problem occurs at all temperatures. If we wait 5-15 minutes it will start. Have replaced the battery and starter My girlfriends...

Take the car in, and have the fuel pump checked, and maybe the alternater. Something in there is going out. Could even be lose battery cables, or a lose connection. Either way, you should have it checked before you get stuck somewhere.
