If your only hearing it for a couple seconds, it's just the vehicle building up oil pressure and pumping up the timing chain tensioner. Over time the timing chain stretches and it takes a little longer for the tensioner to take out the slack.

I agree with ensane 1970. but if u wana check your timeing chain just pull off your valve cover and feel the chain, if it has slack it is probably pretty wore. and u should be able to tell if you look down in the front cover the guides will be worn to.

2001 grand am 2,4 died acted like timing chain turning over freely cant find a problem with chain

Probably lost spark or gas to the engine. Try a little starting fluid or carb cleaner into the intake at the big air boot. then try starting. If it tries to start, or at least fires off just a bit, then you know it's getting spark and fuel is the problem-probably the fuel pump. Do you hear the pump in the gas tank buzz for 2 seconds when you turn the key to on, not start? It's supposed to turn on for 2 seconds to prime the line to the engine.
If the fluid test causes nothing, then pull off a plug wire and check for spark when cranking the engine. No spark? Just go to you tube: look for "no spark, no start": videos. Probably have one for grand ams, or at least GM cars. Their ignition systems are all quite similar. Most often the problem is the crank position sensor or the ignition control module.

you have to check if fuel pump is turning on open gas cap listen closely have someone turn key to run pump will turn on for 2-3 seconds then check to see if there is spark check that first

Is there a timing belt or chain.

The 2000 Toyota Corolla will have a timing chain. Earlier models have the Belt. The chain is pretty much maintenance free. When it is time to replace it you will usually start to hear a rattle where the chain is losing tension and is vibrating against the chain guide.

I have a 2004 toyota corolla. It has a timing chain not a belt. does it need to be changed and at what mileage Regards Dirk

relax -- the nicest thing about a timing chain is that it should last as long as the engine does . . .

Just had the timing chain repaired a week ago. Went to start the car today and it won't start, almost like it never connects (battery is fine). You also hear almost like a humming noise afterward (about 10...

so, when you try to start it, do you hear the starter make a noise like a clunk? or just a whining like a motor spinning. was the car running well after you had the work done on the timing chain?

it could be the starter solenoid not extending the pinion gear to engage the flywheel to turn the engine.

1995 nissan maxima

It has a chain. they usually do not have problems with them.
Check to see if you can hear the fuel pump come on with your ear up to the open gas cap whil;e someone tries to start the car for a second.
You should hear it come on for four seconds.
if it comes on, then check for spark at the spark plug wire with a spark tester.

Is valve adjustment a part of normal maitenance on Suzuki Esteem

When you hear some tapping, that's why you need -valve adjustments. At 137,000miles you probably need more than that to continue your trouble-free drives.

1997 Buick will not start

coil pack played out, or timing chain jumped. Use a timing light to see if you have spark. If you haven't, change the coil pack. If you have spark, then check the timing chain. When you aim your timing light at the timing mark, if it's jumping all over the place, you need a timing chain. If that all checks out, you may have a fuel problem. See if you can hear the fuel pump running for a few seconds when you turn the key to the "on" position. If you can hear it, check and change the fuel filter. Let me know how it goes.
