Had a distributor break bad bushing or bearing, replaced the distributor set at #1 cylinder compression stroke. bucks when you try to start but if you can start it runs fine.weak spark at #1 plug wire

Had a distributor break bad bushing or bearing, replaced the distributor set at #1 cylinder compression stroke. bucks when you try to start but if you can start it runs fine. weak spark at #1 plug wire to a external spark plug. checked timing with the damper marks. it seems to seaze up. when you remove ignition plug so you don't have ignition it cranks fine tried a new battery. same outcome. could it be the ign coil thats what i am going to try

SOURCE: HELP! I have a 95 gmc 4x4... sank it underwater.

the starter could be too close to the flywheel. try adding a couple of starter shims. it also could be drawing to many amps from internal corrosion from water intrusion.

drags down and then clicks? then is a dirty batterie post if that is not it, then there is a fuel problem to check, starting fluid spray through the intake air, make sure not to spray directly onto the map sensor.

Check the Ignition Control Module. Usually these are mounted in the base of the distributor - the distributor wire harness plugs into it. If you already changed that, then I would have the ECM ( Engine Control Module ) tested. I really hope it is the ICM - they are much cheaper than the ECM!!

86 nissan 4×4 3.0. V6 distributor set with number 1 tdc but timing marks on pulley are about 180 degrees off engine starts and runs

Which pulley is 180 degrees out? Crank or Cam?
The Crank shaft turns twice for every one turn of the camshaft so you could have positioned it halfway through the 4 stroke cycle so you are not at tdc on number 1.
If it is the Cam pulleys that are out of position try this...
Using a socket and ratchet, By Hand turn the CRANK Pulley CLOCKWISE One full rotation. This should bring the timing marks into the right position.

Trying to install a distributor in 1991 GMC Sonoma 4.3.Standard slotted rotor no 180 out issue, cap.No: v, 6 0r 8 stamped on the housing.set TDC where the to point rotor point once in.

Point it at the #1 spark plug tower (for cylinder one). If you are on TDC of the compression stroke, it will fire and start. If you are on TDC of the exhaust stroke, this is when your distributor is 180 degrees off.
Rotor must be pointing to #1 when crankshaft is at TDC of compression stroke.

How to insall distributer on 1966 ford mustang

Okay, you have to set the number 1 cylinder at TDC of its
compression stroke, and then drop in the distributor so the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower. This should start the car, then you could set the timing to spec with a timing light.

There are two TDC's of a cylinder- the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke. To find the compression stroke, take out the #1 cylinder spark plug. Put your finger over the hole. Now either turn the engine over by hand (with a socket on the crankshaft pulley-turn clockwise), OR have a helper bump the starter over in as short bursts as possible. As soon as you feel pressure on your finger- stop turning- the piston in #1 is rising on its compression stroke. Now check the timing pointer or scale by the crank pulley. Turn the engine slowly on over until the notch or mark on the crank pulley is right on the zero degrees mark on the scale. This is TDC of compression stroke-the piston is at top of travel in the cylinder. Put the distributor in so the rotor will be pointing to the #1 spark plug wire.

How do i set the distributor that runs counter clockwise

No different than setting one that turns clockwise. You set it in so the rotor on the distributor shaft lines up with the number 1 cylinder spark plug tower on the distributor cap, and then you follow the firing order around in a counter clockwise direction.
This will get the distributor set right, as long as you have the number one cylinder at Top Dead Center of the compression stroke before you drop the distributor in.
To find TDC of compression stroke, pull the number one spark plug. Turn the engine over by hand with a socket on the crank pulley-turn it clockwise-or you can have someone bump the starter over in short bursts. With your finger over the spark plug hole, turn the crank over until you feel air pressure build up in the cylinder. Now look at the timing pointer scale next to the crank pulley. Keep turning the crank until the notch or mark on the crank pulley lines up with the zero degrees mark on the pointer scale. The air pressure behind your finger tells you that you are on the compression stroke. When the crank pulley notch lines up, you are at TDC of the compression stroke. The piston will be at the top of its travel. Now you can drop in the distributor. Keep playing with it until you have the rotor pointing directly to the number 1 spark plug tower. The shaft will turn a little as it is dropped in, so you start with the rotor a little ways back from directly to number 1.

I bought a 1984 chevy 350 engine from a salvage yard that ran but never ran right. Come to find out it had a bad exhaust valve. we took the head off blew it out and replaced the valve and put the head back...

If you have a weak spark it will not start since under compression it takes a much stronger spark to jump the gap as compared to a spark in normal air pressure. Try a good known working coil.

Have 5.2 1994 Dodge Dakota. I replaced the distributor, Timing is way off, Please Help! How do I correct it!

#1 cylinder is at top dead center twice during a normal combustion cycle - once at the top of the compression stroke and once at the top of the exhaust stroke. To make sure you're coming up on the compression stroke, remove the #1 spark plug and hold your finger over the hole as you rotate the crankshaft. If you feel pressure, it's the right stroke. If you don't, continue for another complete revolution of the crankshaft.
Once you'e at TDC on the compression stroke, then insert your distributor with the rotor pointing at the #1 position (you may need to adjust the distributor drive shaft - lift it to disengage from the cam gear - to get the rotor pointing as close as possible to #1).

Replaced old distributor with new "OE" distributor, but failed to mark old rotor position. I know to find #1 cylinder - do I aim rotor at #1 position when TDC is located?

you need to make sure you are on the compression stroke when the piston comes up to TDC for cylinder #1. Most times you can just feel the compression with your finger over the spark plug hole. After determining the #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke, note the position of the #1 spark plug lead on the distributor cap. You will need to line up the rotor with the terminal inside the cap for #1.

Remove cylinder # 1 spark plug, # 1 is the front one on drives side, turn crankshaft pulley to TDC on compression stroke, you'll feel the comperssion at cylinder #1 spark plug hole, follow cylinder # 1 spark plug wire to distributor cap, mark outer part of distributor where # 1 sits, remove distributor and restabe distributor with rotor at mark you made, then set timing.
