What temp should the gauge reach before the fans kick on in a 99 olds silhouette. mine r kicking on low just at the red mark of hot. my overheat light does not come on and the bulb is good. what could cause this? i have replace all hoses, therm, temp sensor, checked all relays and fuses. when i turn on the ac the fans work properly but not when ac is of.

As long as it is not overheating, it should be normal . 210-230 degrees is normally where fans kick on and factory gauges are not always exact .

The PCM will complete the ground path for low speed cooling fan relay under any of the following conditions:
• When engine coolant temperature exceeds 105°C (221°F).
• When A/C is requested and ambient temperature is above 9°C (48°F).
• When A/C refrigerant pressure is greater than 190 psi (2 volts).
• When the ignition is Off and engine coolant temperature is greater than 140°C (140°F).
The PCM will complete the ground paths for all engine three cooling fan relays under any of the following conditions:
• When engine coolant temperature exceeds 113°C (235°F).
• When A/C refrigerant pressure is greater than 275 psi (2.9 volts).

    Diagnosis
If a problem that involves the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit (cooling fan relay #1 control) exists, DTC P1651 should set. If the problem affects the high speed cooling fan relay control circuit (Cool Fan 2 Relay and Cool Fan Relay), DTC P1652 should set. A problem with the ECT sensor should set DTC P0117, P0118, P1114, or P1115. Any of these DTCs will affect cooling fan operation and should be diagnosed before using the Electric Cooling Fan Diagnosis table. The Electric Cooling Fan Diagnosis table should be used to diagnose the PCM controlled cooling fans only if no DTC is set.

If coolant can be detected inside the car, you need to replace the heater core. After it's replaced, the low coolant light should not come on after the heater core is replaced, and the system refilled. If it does, you need to check further. Go w/ the heater core for now, as it will fog up the inside of the car, and become a safety issue.

SOURCE: Overheats while Idling.

there are 3 cooling fan reays in a 98 aurora and they are computer controlled. the low speed fan relay should turn on when the ecu detects a temp of 229 degrees and should turn off when the temp has dropped to 216 degrees. it is best to check the temp with a computer monitor so you can see what the computer is reading. If you turn the a/c on you can see if the fans are operating. If they don't come on with the a/c you may have a problem with the high side a/c switch. A bad thermostat can cause the fans to come on late.

Cooling Fan running

check your coolant level for anti freeze strength and also check your thermostat is opening fully, to do this take out the thermostat and place it in a bold of hot water you will see it closing then place it in a cold bowl of water an you should see it opening, Also check your temp sender for a few bucks you may as well change it out though.

Sounds like your electric fan is not kicking in when the engine is hot and there is no ram air going through the radiator. Warm up the car and let it idle stationary, watching the temp. gauge and look to see if the fan kicks in when the temp gauge reaches about the 3/4 mark. If it does not there is a problem with the thermostatic switch or its relay.

My temperature gauge on my 97 honda is on the line in the middle that separates blue from red with red meaning hot. If its directly on the line in the middle, does it mean its about to run hot? Should it...

well what temp has the car ran in in the past has it always ran at that temp if its not in the red then i wouldn't worry

if it has not always ran that hot then id get it checked out it could be a bad thermostat or radiator fan not kicking on early enough or fan temperature sensor getting lazy and not kicking fan on correctly

if u want it to run a little cooler then just put a cooler thermostat in it

When running the engine TOUCH the bottom part of the radiator fins, if the temperature is not the same or cold, u got a blocked radiator FiNS, and u need to replace it! Check also ur Radiator fan, note down what temperature it started to work. If the Fan works at high temp, means ur TEMPERATURE SENSOR switch for rad fan is not working or it has a higher temp operating value! Hope that might solve ur temperament! j/k!

2002 Suzuki xl7 Mysterious Overheating Issue

Most Suzukis A/C systems will cut out when the engine tempurature is too high (to reduce the load on the engine). Also, in this condition, when the A/C compressor cuts out, the A/C thermo fan (electric - in front of the condensor) may come on ( to try and cool the engine). Combined with the fact that your temp gage says the engine is hot, I would be checking your cooling system very closely. It could be as simple as leaves blocking the air flow through the radiator (between the condensor and radiator), or as serious as the internal cores of the radiator being blocked (different sorts of coolant being used can sometimes produce solid matter that can do this).
