I have a 2002 Chev Cavalier that had the same exact problem. I replaced the bulb harness (purchased from a chevy dealership for around $5) which was fairly easy to do. I have had zero problems with it since.

SOURCE: Brake light, reverse light and turn signal issues

Hello. The symptoms you are describing are likely due to a poor ground. Temporarily install a new ground wire by securing a piece of copper wire to the frame with a self tapping screw. Use this ground wire along with the hot wire to see if each of these lights works. If it does, trace the ground wire back to the frame, unscrew it and clean up the metal with emery cloth so you reestablish a good ground.

Check the bulb socket for a burnt or a shorted condition. Remove bulb and try another bulb, if it does it again then you have a short in the socket or wiring to bulb. Turn on the 4 way flashers and see what it will do. If it continues then look for any burnt wire connector or wireing to bulb. Check the wiring behind the light for any metal that has cut into the wiring insulation. Hope this will help you.

I cannot fix the rear left turn signal/brake light on a 1997 Ford Contour. Where does this circuit go? I don't want to have to take the car to a Ford dealer to fix.

The turn signal/brake light wire goes to the turn signal mechanism in the steering column. It does this so your brake light and turn signals work at the same time. For example you put your foot on the brake and the left brake light will come on but allow the right turn signal to flash. Try you four way flashers and see what happens. Also be wary of the socket the bulb fits into. Double check for voltage with a test light at the wire coming in from the back. Check that the socket is getting a good ground. You can run a ground wire to a clean area of metal from the socket if you have to.

1998 Contour turn signal problem

Check the plugs on the back lights. There must be a bad ground. Remove the light from the socket in the rear light, then depress the metal wire that holds the plug onto the light receptacle. Clean the contacts and ensure they are free from corrosion and rust. Try putting some dieelectric grease on the contacts. NOTE: The center wire BLACK is ground, and you could splice a wire from it to the metal of the car via one of the screws, on both sides, if after cleaning both sides they still dont work.

Check the left side of the vehicle for a blown bulb or incorrect bulb in one of the sockets. The fast flash is a signal to tell you something is wrong with that side
