Check the upper radiator house. When the engine is cool this hose is cool and soft to a squeeze pressure. If you check the same hose while the engine is hot "use caution as this hose might be very hot" this hose shoud be hot and stiff to the touch (louded under pressure). Lack of either is normally a sign of a bad thermostat or a failing water pump. Also check that the water reservoir cap is not leaking, is only a $5 fix.

Radiators do clog up and that reduces its cooling capacity. The car should run cooler with the t-stat removed, I suspect the radiator is partially clogged. Flushing may work, but I can't say that it will.

You may simply have air in your radiator. Often when fluid is changed or leeks out air gets stuck inside. This happens often. You need to locate radiatior pressure relief valve. Open this while car is warm and running, but immediatly close when no air comes out just water.

Saturn is overheating, tried several things.. nothing is working.

how about the coolant temp sensor, they had alot of problems with that sensor and also the plug for it,some have two of these sensors side by side, one for the gauge and the other for the fan, i would replace these first and go from ther good luck,

My 2002 Saturn SC2's temperature gauge goes into the red when I idle at a stoplight too long or in the drive thru at the bank. It never does this when driving on the street or freeway. I've had the...

Be very careful as overheating can cause permanent damage to the head gasket. Now whenever an engine temp reaches half then the fan should start,so watch if this is working.Allow engine to run and watch the temp gauge goes up..Once it is half then the fan should start, if it does not replace thermostat..Else watch the radiator as it may be blocked.

2001 Saturn SC1 Overheats when AC is turned on

Hello donezero,

Thank you for choosing fixya.com.

Try replacing the thermostat first. I see you mentioned that it overheats with the A/C on, while in neiborhood streets (or lower speeds). Also, with the vehicle parked, and the car running, raise the hood, and watch to see if the fans are coming on. If not, check the fuses in the fuse box. You may have a blown fuse. Examine both top and bottom radiator hoses to make sure there are no cracks, holes, or bubbles. If they look like they need replaced, replace them. Also, check the fuse and any relays that may be associated to the A/C pump - there should be one of each. By changing the thermostat, you eliminating it right away for being the reason of overheating. After diong all this, and the car still overheats under these circumstances, replace the temperature sensor, which is located on the intake manifol (usually close by the thermostat ) driver side of engine, toward front or center. (may be on passenger side, depending on engine). If this does not take care of the problem, consider a certified mechanic for further assistance.

I sincerely hope this information is helpful in getting your car (A/C) running properly. Let me know if I can be of further assistance in this matter. Thank you again for choosing fixya.com.
