Hi. I have a 2006 Toyota Hilux with a 3.0 litre D4D diesel engine. It blows out blue oil smoke for about five seconds on startup. If I perk the car on an upward facing smoke the problem is worse. If I park facing down hill it does not smoke. It loses power sometimes and blows a lotf smoke going uphill feels like a turbo problem. Recently had new valve stem and injector oil seals. any ideas please

Hi , couple of questions,
1. is it using engine oil?
2. What type of diesel fuel do you burn ?(cheap/premium)
3. Have you ever used fuel additives ?
4. Does the smoke go away after warm up or still there when you put car under load / accelerate hard?

Simple thing first with the engine ticking over lift bonnet/hood and remove the dipstick, have someone lightly rev the engine LIGHTY if you see oil traveling up the dipstick spout , this is a sign of the crankcase pressurising , their is a crankcase breather filter which are obtain overlooked during servicing which can cause e
If you are not burning oil , look for the egr valve it will be coming off the air intake and insure it is clean and operational( this is an emission saving device fitted to diesels which lets the engine re -burn it exhaust gases) it can get clogged with oily residue from the diesel fuel and in fact can be like a tar consistency this clogs/ not functioning correctly can cause power loss and oil deposits making their way into the exhaust system and stops valves seating correctly . On positive it is easy to work at and clean with brake cleaner, then dry and lightly oil to free up then wipe clean.

also worth while and to ensure work on egr was worth while and lasts remove the air intake ducts as these too will be clogged it builds up over time and can reduce the air duct flow by50% this is not cleaned during ordinary servicing! clean with boiling water and washing up liquid sounds strange but worked best for me! Let sit to work using baby bottle /pipe cleaners when clean ensure it is dry completely before refitting I found blowing out with compressor was worth while as you do not want and loose dirt inside as I will make its way through.

final thought which has been very beneficial for me, when carried out the above use only premium fuel( cheaper fuel now is mixed with bio diesel and leaves bad engine deposits ) use diesel fuel additive I have found millers Eco max 4 excellent, double dose first time drive hard in 3rd for a few miles to work its way though you will notice smoke for the first couple of used this is contamination working through system. Let me know how you get on and good luck.

SOURCE: 1993 TOYOTA TERCEL 1500cc Valve Seals Replaced now smokes much worse

You either have had the wrong valve seals installed, they are physically missing, or the valves are incorrect (too loose in the guides/stem too thin). The rocker arm seals will not contribute to your issue. If it did not have the oil smoke before you took the head off, the issue is with whatever the machine shop did. Valve seals have to fit TIGHT, or oil will go down the valve stem into the intake.
Take the head back to the machine shop & tell them to fix it. For free.

SOURCE: hi there. i have a 1986 toyota hilux 3.0l turbo(knocking)

I have a Toyota Hilux 3.0 KZ-TE fitted with a intercooler and on Saterday on a 4x4 outing the engine light on the dashboard came on and the motor started spluttering and excessive white smoke came out of the exhaust. The problem persisted for several minutes and then went away. The verdict from other 4x4 owners was that the turbo needs an overall, I cannot understand this as it is fine again with no mechanical interferance.

SOURCE: number one injector bank on 2006 dodge cummins

you'll notice on your valve cover gasket there is two connectors.. the one up front is your 1-3 the one in the rear is your 4-6... you can remove your valve cover and check the connections from the injector connectors to the
connectors on the valve cover.. check for an open.. however you could also have a fault internally in 1 of your injectors in that bank as well.. hope this info helped..

SOURCE: Hi, I own a 3.0

White smoke on diesel engines, means water in combustion chamber. Blue smoke means oil.
In what condition was the filter you removed? How bad? Temperature issues? Missing coolant maybe? If yes, you might as well have an internal leak. Some gasket maybe. Check all you vital fluids levels. If anything missing, take the time to empty the engine oil on a can, and check the colour. If it will look like chocolate brown, then you do have a leak from the inside.

SOURCE: Hi, I have a 2005 hilux 3.0 turbo Diesel , it started blowing blue smoke at startup from cold at 130,000ks . Once it warms up a little it clears.

could be a leaking injector or turbo charger passing oil. The oil collects in the intercooler and runs down slowly when parked. remove intercooler hose and check for oil, if there is oil in the intercooler change or repair turbo. If on start up the vehicle tends to idle rough ans smokes could be injector. Either way this can lead to disaster.

I have toyota hilux 2.5d4d 2kd engine it smokes allot blue smoke an engine shakes allot what can be problem

if there is a lot of blue smoke its burning engine oil and the shaking is because the plugs are not firing correctly because they are fouled by the oil. also could be plug wires worn out, distributor cap and rotor if it has one as you don`t say what year this is. the burning oil could be rings, valve seals/guides, PCV system plugged.

2008 Hilux 2.5 d4d, 2kd engine. Why does it belch blue smoke and shake a lot?

Blue smoke is indicative of burning oil, and the heavy shaking is showing that it's not firing properly on all cylinders. Check your oil levels and see if they have gotten low. Check your plugs and see if they are fouled or vaporized. It is likely you've got oil leaking into your cylinders, and that it is being burned during normal engine operation. If your plugs are fouled, replace them. If your plugs are fouled AND your oil is depleting, you're going to have to change out the gaskets in your engine, and I would also recommend you run fuel system / total engine cleaning and conditioning fluid (like SeaFoam) through your engine.

Toyota hilux pick up D4D has a hard start in the morning but ok after the first start, kindly advise

Have a compression test done to determine the engine condition. With the hard start and oil usage it points to a worn rings and a lower compression pressure than is required.

Hi, I have a 2005 hilux 3.0 turbo Diesel , it started blowing blue smoke at startup from cold at 130,000ks . Once it warms up a little it clears.

There can be several reasons for this. You can have worn valve stem seals on the valves, which may change with warm oil, or you have worn oil rings in the cylinders.

A compression test when the engine is cold would reveal if the piston rings are worn. Another possibility could be a bad head gasket which leaks oil when cold and then seals when the heads warm. A compression test would also diagnose this.
