What does working mean.
1: cranks but will not start
2: runs bad.
3: spark dead.

the stock sammy engine, 1.3 has a stand alone Distributor.
it has a VR sensor + ignitor and 1 external coil.
any ign coil can be bench tested. ask.
did you do the checks in the FSM yet?

many a SAMMI have the engine swapped, this old
many are upgraded to Sidekick G16 engines, so first post what the engine is, or a photo of it for fast ID.
chapter 8 ? read that? volume 2.
pdf page 69:? coil tests.
set the VR gap right yet? page 70
vr gen resistance page 70?
page 71 , ignitor test , figures 8-16?

does rotor spin , cranking?
with a voltmeter on the negative (-) . terminal (Volts to ground test)
does the ignitor fire the coil as you crank car.
12v, 0v, 12v ,0v, repeats as you crank
if not, the Dizzy is bad, or not grounded.
or the the coil is open (primary) see page 69 again.

if the dizzy is dead. we replace the whole thing
from Cardone, for 1/2 prize of bad parts inside.
the internals are very expensive.

the distributor must be grounded well, and with varnish on these
old parts, that can fail.

the VR is a very weak signal (below 1v) that is is amplified by the
VR amp then this is a strong gating signal to the Ignitor which
is just a very powerful transistor, in reality.
you can check the ignitor output with a meter or scope of any kind
to see if it is FIRING.

if the voltage is 0v, the coil is open or the ignitor is shorted.
the latter failure, loves to burn up good coils.
if stuck at 12v, cranking, the VR/Ignitor is bad, try setting the gap
or grounding the dizzy case with a jumper wire to the battery neg lug.
that is it on old DIZZy's (distributors, unless the advance is bad....)

SOURCE: The timing belt broke, went to replace it, head crank wont turn

The vehicle has an interference engine. This means that when the piston can hit the valves when not in time. The valves are damaged or bent or shattered . The head or engine most likely is going to have to be replaced.

They are a magnetic pickup device. You can test them but the test is never conclusive. Go to O'Reileys or Autozone, they usually scan your car for free. Hope this helps...

Hi all, 2002 neon Wil not start. problem.

ever see the car run good before, or just died dead? out of the blue?>
cranks ok or not. (grrrr grrrrr sound, or not)_ called cranking the crank shaft. fast.
cranks starter motor fast and not starting?
or never cranks the starter motor at all silent starter?????

2002 Dodge Neon, with secret motor under the hood.
2.0 liter engine, 132HP. or he 2.4L I an not guess engines ever
SOHC or DOHC engine were there, both an OPTION./
VIN F or VIN C engine they are not the same.
the twin cam engine DOHC is interference engine that must not be timed wrong ever. I'm told both are but my test is most strict ask.
"Power on no 1 and 2 coil plug wires but none on no 3"
does power mean HV spark or the primary side has power
yes it does if fuse is not blown, all fuses good is first. ok , all.
ASD sends 12vdc to the spark coils.

"Looks like it is one tooth out on timing.( the cam belt wrong?)
really? no engine PCM likes that, it can bend valves on some engines. never time a cam wrong .or boom happens.
the non COP engine (1 coil pack)
has just 1 coil pack with 4 HV terminals
there is no spark timing at all, (is cmp + ckp)_
cam wrong wrecks cam time and spark both.
CMP sensors and CKP sensors set spark timing, and are fixed in the case of crank. (the cam CMP sensor will be off if belt is timed wrong.
WASTED SPARK if you replaced the 4 spark wires 1 by 1,
there would be no mixup and spark would be good.
Coil No. 1 fires cylinders 1 and 4. Coil No. 2 fires cylinders Nos. 2 and 3.
if you mix up the 4 wires HV it will not run
mixing 1 to 4 works, but the wires are too short
mixing 2 and 3 works, same deal
mixing 1 to 2 or 4 to 3 is FAIL
see why> firing order wrong. PCM does the older not you.
if you wreck the order it will not run.
4COPS can mix all you what so there I did both engines

the cam belt is a 60,000 service, if skipped the DOHC blows up.
piston hits valves and boom valves bent and heads a train wreck from H3LL. and compression not 200psi but 5. BOOM.
never skip cam belt service, did you?
did you drive it till it DIED? not told
or just doing normal service now.?
history matters, next time ask for help before going broke on part not needed
btw the quad spark pack the best ones are marked clear as day
1,2,3,4 at HV terms
and engine is
cambelt 1,2,3,4 , trans.
to test for spark only unplug 1 plug or get wrong results on 4 in 1 pack.
the 4cop spark coils test them any why you want even all at once.

always assume interference or go broke fast
and some engine heads milled become interference and you can't know that standing far away 3 feet.
there are some DOHC engines that are free running
means cam stalled and crank spins and zero damage

if you bought a dead car(my act for years) we check compression first not buy tons of parts praying for a dead engine to run.
even engines on a pallet used. I test them.
time the cam per the service manual
if you'd tell what engine was there I'd post it.

note the better coil pack
to test # 2 or 3 both spark plugs 2 and 3 must be connected
and shells ground to the engine block or both fail.
and both spark wires can not be open, mag wire is best.
this is called wasted spark and is only 2 coils if you look closer

Hello Tom,I had the plugs, wires and coil replaced, but no improvements. Can it be a sensor, or the cam nsor? Im going nuts, and broke.

We all know that feeling, especially the broke part. Stop throwing parts at it. You need a good diagnosis. For "cranks, no start" check fuel pressure and spark. For no spark, use a wiring diagram and understand what is involved. The crank and cam sensors are usually part of the mix. The computer (pcm) uses these sensors to determine spark timing, and often injector timing. Also besides coil, plugs, and wires, and the sensors mentioned, don't forget how the ignition system controls the coils- the ignition control module, or ICM. This little part is often the cause of no spark. But, everything can and should be tested first.

Troubleshooting engine

Yes you are heading in right right direction. Check to see if there is spark out of coil. Spark at coil means replace distributor or rotor. No spark at coil replace ignition module or crank sensor good luck. Oh yea crank sensor is cheaper i would try that first if there is spark out of coil.

My 1994 cavalier lost spark to cylinders 1 and 4. Which components are directly related to ignition spark and timing? What about the camshaft sensor?

You listed all the components involved in spark timing and control- coil, ignition module, pcm, wires, plugs, crank sensor, and cam sensor.
Cylinders 1 and 4 have the same coil for both, so concentrate on that coil. You still have a good blue spark on cylinders 2 and 3? If you have spark there, I don't know about the cam sensor-I think it would be good if it works at all. You need to check if you have 12 volts power to the coil for 1 and 4.

My 89 jeep cherokee won't. Start it will turn over

what motor? is the coil producing spark?? If so, check the fuel pressure, if the fuel pressure is low drop the tank, repace the pump and also replace the filter (located on the frame forward of the tank). If the coil is not producing spark, check for shorts or opens in the circuits as well as the IGN fuses. If there is NO fuel pressure at all check the fuel pump fuses and make sure the fuel pump is plugged in and there are no opens in the circuit

Wont start

is the your car engine cranking when you try to start, first check spark plugs ignition coils, remove one ignition coil and spark plug fix the spark plug in to the ignition coil then connect ignition coil to wiring and keep spark plug body touching on ground of engine head mettle parts, ask some one to crank engine then you can see is the plug sparking or not, do the same way to all the coils and plug otherwise you have to buy a ignition spark tester, is the all the coils and spark plugs are OK then check the fuel pump, it's sitting in under rear seat, before that do one thing disconnect oxygen (O2) sensor wiring and crank engine, the thing is if your oxygen sensor completely dead fuel pump will stop working, if engine start after disconnect O2 sensor, replace new O2 sensor, otherwise need to check fuel pump relay fuse and fuel pump. is this information helped you? please vote me and give a comment.
