Transmission wont shift into high gear

I have an 86 Olds Delta 88 with the 3.8 v6 (believe it has the 440t4 tranny). Recently, I took it on a trip involving highway driving, before then its always been city. I went approximately 65 miles at 55-65 mph. I got off an exit to get a drink and bathroom break. When I went to get back on the highway, it wouldn't shift into a higher gear. When it gets up to 25mph,it just revs up. I changed the vacuum modulater and the fluid is at the correct level. What do you suggest could be the problem?

you may have damaged the overdrive gear, a local transmission shop would be your best bet. for good troubleshoting and estimate.

SOURCE: transmission leak

Most likely problems described are not related. Rough idle and rough at low speeds could be caused by spark plug and wires due for replacement. Tranny pans known to leak and is an easy condition to remedy with filter and gasket replacement

Engine revs up when putting excelarator in passing gear but trasmission does not shift into passing gear. it is a 86 olds toranado

Has the transmission flushed and the filter been changed recently? That could be the problem of it not shifting into passing gear.

Location of oil filter in 1997 oldsmobile delta 88 LS?

Well, in my 1989 Olds 88, the oil filter is just above the right swingarm for the wheel. It's an interesting reach from underneath, and the oil drips directly onto the frame of the car, but that's where the filter should be.

I believe they use the same 3800 (3.8L V6) engine up through 1997 or 1998...so you should be able to find it there. Hope that helps!

Tranny wont shift

Sounds like you need a rebuild on your transmission. The overdrive is going out in the transmission system.

Transmission problems

sounds like the bands in the transmission are burnt up!! I would say try changing the tranny fluid first and filter to see if you get any metal in the fluid and see if new fluid helps!
