ABS - Anti-lock Brake System. If the ABS lights on the dashboard permanently the ABS system is faulty. You must access the ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ABS ECU, in other words reset the ABS system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard. ASR - Acceleration Skid Control system. When ASR warning light blinking the system is activated itself for car acceleration skid control. For today's typical high-torque engines, traction control (ASR) can increase both comfort and safety, particularly when driving on slippery roads or surfaces offering differing levels of grip. Traction control permits smooth starting and acceleration through the full speed range without wheel-spin or fishtailing.
ASR only operates in conjunction with the electronic accelerator (E-gas) and uses components of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning. The ASR system represents a further contribution to active safety as it maintains vehicle traction and directional stability throughout the acceleration phase at any speed. In addition, it reduces tyre wear. Activation of the ASR system is indicated by a flashing indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. ESP system includes the ABS system.
The ASR and ABS are voltage sensitive, so each time you disconnect them from power, they will reset. To cancel the ASR light, start engine then turn steering wheel full lock to right, then lock to left...ASR should extinguish. ABS light should then go out once you drive above 8 mph for 100yards or so. Until you can have the climate control looked at by a professional, I would locate and remove the fuse for it when you park up. Much better than disconnecting battery.
If you fixed let me know I have the same problem on my slk 99. For your information a MB guru told me that is the ETS/ASR CONTROL MODULE that is attach to the ABS hydraulic unit
no 0205459632. It is very expensive I ordered. I will post results in two weeks.
Most likely cause is the 'stop lamp switch'
It is a electric switch located on the brake pedal inside the car, about half way up on the brake pedal.
Pretty cheap too, I think the switch is only like $25 bucks.
2 connectors on the switch and then it turns out.
hope that helps
ok, first you have to clear the codes.
in this type of cars you cannot clear codes with a regular obd II it has to be the factory scanner or similar. after you clear the codes drive it for a while. when light comes back on scan it again and that is going to be your true problem. if you replaced the switch but didn't clear the code the light will be still on because the computer doesn't know that you fixed the problem. so try it out and let me know if worked.
