Geo IS GM, and they may (?) have parts. but support is very poor there on GEO.s
i'd start here.

THIS IS AN INTEFERENCE ENGINE.
I responded because you are one of the only folks posting here
that knows whats under their hood. of the 3 types.
1.6 L SOHC 4XE1 I4
1.6 L DOHC 4XE1 I4

You, engine is a 4xe1 (isuzu sady don't change the engine name with the DOHC up grade , making parts hard to find and books.
Suzuki did the same silly thing too...
as you might guess, the DOHC is timed quite different.
right now im online at alldata.
and you are at step 11. the cam belt
staring at 3 big cam cogs.
here is the drawing. (1 of 2, the 2nd is belt routing)
step 7

SOURCE: have kia sportage 2.0l four cam timing marks,!Whitch one?

gregorykilke: your engine has several references if you are describing the same vehicle. The 1996 KIA Sportage has a SOHC engine and was the last year to use one before they went exclusively to twin cams.
The timing marks are as follows: On the crank, position the crank to where the woodruff key is in the 12:00 position. There is a metal plate with a notch behind the gear. If you look closely at the engine behind the plate, thought the notch, there should be a small "ARROW" which should fall within the notch. If lined up properly, the #1 piston will be at TDC.
On the top end of the engine, your cam gear is numbered 1-2-and 3. Position the cam to where the #2 on the gear is at 12:00. On the back side of that gear, should be a mark which should be running in line with the # 2 and it is the "Match mark which you line up with the small arrow or "V" on the cover.
A word of caution! This is an interference fit engine which means it BENDS VALVES IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIMING CORRECT AND YOU HAVE BEEN SPINNING THE ENGINE OVER!
IF>>>you are lucky, you might not have had the timing too far off and the valves may be fine, but exercise EXTREME caution when setting up the valve timing.
One way to avoid bending valves, is to make sure none of the pistons are at or close to TDC. This way, you can roll the cam in position and then watch which direction is going to bring the #1 piston up and whether it is rotating the engine clockwise or counter clockwise to bring the piston to that position , it won't harm anything. IF you feel any resistance at all STOP!!!!!! because the timing is off and you will bend valves.
Make sure the tensioner pulley bearing turns smoothly and makes no noise. DO NOT WASH IT WITH SOLVENT OR SPRAY IT OFF WITH CARB SPRAY! The solvent will get inside the sealed bearing area and contaminate the lubricant causing a premature bearing failure and a potential disaster for your engine!
Should you need further assistance on this subject, just ask and I'll do what I can to help. The belt tension is also CRITICAL!
Take care guy, Give the folks at FIXYA some input if I am doing you any good or if I have helped anyone else, write in and let them know. They want feed back. GOOD LUCK!

How do I secure the camshaft gears on a 2002 outback 2.5l to remove and repalce?

if you have the head machined you will have to realine cams back tp proper marks and no if head is off and the cams turn some it will not damage the valves, usually this only happens if timing chain or belt is out and repeated try to start the engine...You should be fine and good luck and if more info is needed please feel free to contact me and remember as long as timing marks on cam are in proper alinement then your good to go..

Hi. I need a picture for the timing marks on a berlingo 1.4 8valve

There is only 1 mark on the cam shaft which alines with a hole on the head that will give you valves 1+2 rocking. Then you remove a spark plug on piston 1 and find TDC top dead center ( when the piston is on it's highest point.Thats the only way.

Head was pulled without marking gears or ignition. how do i start from scratch

You need to turn the engine over and bring it up to top dead center (TDC). Aline your put the chain or belt on. The crank gear will be on you just will need to aline the cam gear as I believe it is overhead cam. Do NOT force the cam gear to turn as you can bend your valves. When you are putting in the distributer as you slide it in it will rotate a bit. Make sure it is alined to where your rotor will be faceing to the #1 position on the cap. I hope you understand. If need be I can look up the timing marks for the cam for you just post a comment if you need. When I say to bring to TDC you turn the engine over to where the # 1 piston is to the top of the cylinder. Hope this helped and good luck.

I have a 1994 geo metro & i'm replacing the timming belt but i ran across a problem. the cam shaft pully has two marks on it (1) mark has 60a & the other mark has 80c. so how do i aline the cam...

thats why you line everything up BEFORE taking the belt off. Usually when the timing marks are "ON" the dowel pin or key for the cam will be at the 12 o clock position. Also if you have the valve cover off, both cam lobes for number one cylinder will be pointing down.and both rocker arms loose. it would be a good idea to adjust the valves also.

Timing marks for the Dodge 2.4L caravan, 2000

To align both sets of timing marks, turn engine crankshaft to the right with belt on cam and crank. Once you have done this the crankshaft alignment mark (on front of crankshaft gear) will line up with mark to the rear of gear on engine block. The two cam gear timing marks should be alines across from one another. The right cam gear is the intake side and the left side is the exhaust side. After removing the belt turn the exhaust cam down 1/2 notch. Timing mark on exhaust 1/2 notch down from the intake side. Install new belt and recheck everything to make sure it's all correct. Hope this will help you.
