SOURCE: Telescopic Steering wheel won't move down - I hear a gear spinning

Open the gear motor on the left hand side of the telelscopic assembly. Take the plate off held by 4 philips screws. Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolt holding the platic gear. Remove plastic gear and insert the reverse way. Over the years, one side of the gears get worn out.

SOURCE: Telescopic Steering wheel won't move down or up

Yes it would be perfectly ok to disegauge the auto switch to keep it from moving again. It needs a tilt motor replaced . not a easy job.

SOURCE: LEXUS LS 400 STEERING DOESNT GO DOWN

I had the same problem and took the steering wheel apart on the left side where the lift motor is. There is a plastic gear that controls your lift that is stripped out. I went to the dealership and they wanted $500 for the assembly, they wouldn't sell just the gear. I went home and after I thought about it a while came up with the idea to turn the gear around backwards since the teeth on that side were in good shape. I put it back together and it has worked great ever since. This should work for you with very little effort. I do now however do not hold or apply alot of pressure to the wheel when it is lifting as this is what causes this problem in the first place. Hope this helps you. Todd

Steering wheel stuck in high position

I took my Lexus to dealership in Tampa. They said it would be so expensive to fix the steering wheel adjustment not working , that I should get rid of the car. My 99 Lexus is beautiful and runs great. It is sad that dealers feel this way. Bill in Tampa

Where is the alternator located on a 1991 ls 400

The main purpose on an alternator is to recharge current back to the battery. One of the most common problems with the Lexus LS400 and SC400 is that power steering pump seal leak. Right below the power steering pump is the alternator. The power steering fluid will drip down and cause many electrical problems for the alternator. Therefore, its very common to have the alternator go bad along with the power steering pump, just be sure to check.awcforever.gif

Steering wheel wont go up or down or in and out

Well this isn’t a good solution to the problem but I had the same thing and I just unplugged the sensor so I would be able to used the tilt feature without problem I imagine if I get a new sensor the problem will be fixed. When its plugged in it won’t let you move the wheel up and down with out issues if at all but if you take off the cover and unplug the sensor on the right side it will let you tilt the wheel. Also I saw a TSB saying the wires were to tight and this is what the problem was I loosened them up but I am pretty certain it is my sensor. Hope this helps.
