My 96' BMW 328I lost power. thought it was the alternator. tested ok. replaced battery. still losing power like it is running off the battery only until it finally dies. hook charger up to it runs for a little bit until it dies again.

Ok you will have to have it scanned. It probably has cylinder misfire codes and random cylnder misfires. You could need spark plugs and or coils. The scan will tell you exactly which cylinder is missing. That will cure your problem and remember to change your oil and filter right before you go in for the smog test. Also if the car hasn't been serviced in a while it would be a good idea to replace the air filter and fuel filter.

I believe it is your factory anti-theft system. check your owners manual for how to disengage same.

Replace your battery when its being tested there not testing it under a heavy enough load. A battery could have a dead cell in it and still show good on the charger. I've had that problem a few times.

Humm ...Didn't die before the accident? now dies? BMW has good mechanics, but could not find any problem???. I gota think that it is related to the rear ending, but how? I would look for loose connections, Battery Ground that might have been removed before welding.Battery terminals, Any primary connections that may not be making 100% contact . It's worth a try.Good Luck
