Just started happening about an hour ago on my way to work. Had the car ('93 Paseo) for about 2 1/2 weeks and it's been great. Today, the RPMs suddenly started dropping when the clutch is pressed. It drops low enough to kill the engine. Briefly tried it while parked when I got to work. Idle is fine ~1000 rpm. But, when I press clutch, it drops to 500 or less and engine starts to stutter. What's going on? This came on suddenly at the end of my drive to work. Vacuum leak? Clutch suddenly lose adjustment? Where do I start?
Checked it a bit more after work. Doesn't seem to be clutch. It's actually the brake that seems to cause the larger RPM drop. Clutch seems to cause normal fluctuations from changing engine load. Got home and started looking for anything obvious around engine. Started with vacuum lines. Didn''t get too far before I realized that the air intake had come off of the throttle body. Reconnected that and it seems to be working ok now. One of the vacuum lines from the intake goes directly to the air control valve, the other feeds indirectly to the idle control valve. So, would it make sense that this could throw off idle enough that it can't respond to changing engine load at low RPM?
