Gasoline evaporates quite easily. In the past, these evaporative emissions were vented into the atmosphere. 20% of all HC emissions from the automobile are from the gas tank. In 1970 legislation was passed, prohibiting venting of gas tank fumes into the atmosphere. An evaporative control system was developed to eliminate this source of pollution. The function of the fuel evaporative control system is to trap and store evaporative emissions from the gas tank and carburetor. A charcoal canister is used to trap the fuel vapors. The fuel vapors adhere to the charcoal, until the engine is started, and engine vacuum can be used to draw the vapors into the engine, so that they can be burned along with the fuel/air mixture. This system requires the use of a sealed gas tank filler cap. This cap is so important to the operation of the system, that a test of the cap is now being integrated into many state emission inspection programs. Pre-1970 cars released fuel vapors into the atmosphere through the use of a vented gas cap. Today with the use of sealed caps, redesigned gas tanks are used. The tank has to have the space for the vapors to collect so that they can then be vented to the charcoal canister. A purge valve is used to control the vapor flow into the engine. The purge valve is operated by engine vacuum. One common problem with this system is that the purge valve goes bad and engine vacuum draws fuel directly into the intake system. This enriches the fuel mixture and will foul the spark plugs. Most charcoal canisters have a filter that should be replaced periodically. This system should be checked when fuel mileage drops.

Sometimes this one is as easy as checking the gas cap to make sure you have it on right. Faulty seal on the fuel tank will cause all three of these faults as will loose overflow hose on fuel tank. Check your gas cap first make sure it is threaded correctly and tightened all of the way. The link I gave you in the first post is to a Toyota forum that has a list of all of the error codes for your vehicle for future reference.

My wife called me while she was driving her Sienna. She told me ABS, VSC, and Track Off indicators lighted on. When she came home, I checked the car had P0441, P0446, P0455 alarms. I'm glad I found this website. I checked the gas cap didn't close properly. I guessed the cap opened by itself because high temperature outside. I opened and re-closed it again, reset the alarm with my Inova engine monitor. Everything looks fine now.

FUSE TO CONTROLLER CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

There is no fuse. Go to your local parts store and ask them to hook up their code analyzer which will tell you what is wrong. Then they can tell you how to fix the problem. Check engine is no joke and more than likely terminal if not attended to. Most parts stores offer this as a free service. Most vehicles have an access cable connection under the driver side dash board.

Reset code for maint/engine light

Try disconnecting your battery for at least ten minutes. Negative cable. Then if and when the check engine light comes back on, take it to a large auto parts chain store like Autozone, Kragen, O'reilly, etc. They will hook up a hand held analyzer to your car and read the code, then give you a printout of what it is. All for free. Take care.

I just did this with my 1996 outback's check engine light. It is some sort of sensor, oxygen, egr, etc. Go to a place like Autozone parts store or any of the parts stores that will do a free test for you by hooking up their hand held analyzer to your computer. They will read the code and give you a printout of what it means. Take care and good luck.
