Water dripping from exhaust pipe and running rough when at idle

I over heated. I changed the thermostat, gave it an oil change, new spark plugs, new wires, new coolant since it needed to be done anyway. I noticed when at an idle the truck runs rough and also there is water dripping out of the exhaust pipe. I am not loosing water from the radiator.

I have checked and double check the firing order and wires accordingly and they seam to be correct. When i am driving i can hear and slightly feel like a miss sound/feel. I have no trouble until i come to a stop at an idle in drive. If i put it in nuetral or park it runs a little bit better.

Hi, it is possible that the damage have bin done, you could have worped the head, it really hard to say with out some furder testing, you mite want to do a compretion test 4 yr head and system,. But the water leaking from exost some time is normal it hapens due to condensing like in the air condition systems. Hop it helps. G/luck

A year, make and model would be helpful but generally speaking the water dripping from the tail pipe is probably just condensation which is pretty normal, it should go away once it gets completely warmed up. Depending on how hot you got it when it overheated it may have done some damage. As for the rough running, most common mistake is not getting the plug wires back the distributer cap on right. I might be able to be more specific if I had a clue what we are working on.

Water dripping from the exhaust pipe is normal in cold weather until the exhaust system warms up--the water is condensation from the hot gasses meeting the cold (cooler) metal of the exhaust system.

Running rough? there are many causes, timing being one.

This can be your Idle control valve, when you turn the air on it puts the engine under load and your computer will increase the idle automatically to prevent the engine from cutting out.
When you are standing still and the car is shaking, by touching the accelerator very softly does the shaking stop? If so check the idle control valve.
I hope this will help.

Sam

Why sometime pleinty white smoke came out of exaust

White Smoke...
1. Typically normal condensation in the exhaust system converting to steam once engine is running and producing heat creates white smoke. Typically this lasts only a short period of time until condensation water in the exhaust system is gone.

2. If there is a problem, persistent white exhaust could be an indication of a water leak into the cylinders (e.g. cracked head or leaking head gasket. The good news is, this second case will normally will occur with other problems (e.g. consistent rough idle, or rough engine vibration at specific RPMs). If this is suspect, keep an eye on the oil with the dip stick and during next oil change (If any of the oil appears WHITE, there is a problem.). If this is a suspect problem, a test for the DIY'r mechanic would be to remove all the spark plugs, have another person turn the engine over, and watch for water mist to spray out of one or more cylinders.

Because you said sometimes, this sounds like normal condition.

Changed oil in bmw e36 now spark plug socket and spark plug are showing engine oil (old) Shop gave me wrong oil filter so have not started car yet as I do not have the right filter Also I changed air

IF there is a sleeve around the spark plugs then when replacing the plugs replace the seal under that sleave as well or rocker cover oil will leak out past the plug base.. If you want the correct oil filter you may have to buy genuine . Run fault codes to find the reason for rough idle . It may be a vacuum hose is off or cracked or loose.

I think my car blew its head gasket, but theirs no water in oil,if idling temperature stay normal, fans do come on when idling for long.I`ve changed spark plugs, plug wires, thermostat and heat sensor unit.As...

white smoke from the exhaust and overheating would almost certainly mean a blown head gasket.
the head gasket has gone between a cylinder and a cooling channel so exhaust gasses can get in to the cooling system resulting in the boiling and water from the cooling system is getting into the cylinder resulting in the white smoke (actually steam) from the exhaust.
the exhaust manifold is a separate issue that can be replaced when the head gasket is repaired.

I have a 1999 GMC Safari van that overheated last week.Rad was dry.I have refilled with antifreeze water mixture, van runs and has heat , no leaks under vehicle, no antifreeze smell. Van is running rough...

yes a beginner can just follow the top rad. hose to the block use a 10mm socket to take the 2 bolts out. scrape the old gasket away put new gasket and high temp silcone on gasket and install new thermostat.

doesnt sound like the problem to me, check the oil make sure no water is in it, sounds like the head is cracked on the exhaust side and ur water is going out your tailpipe, so in turn would ruin your cat converter and make the truck run raggy

1fz-fe engine 80series using water unable to find leak small leak also runs rough especially at idle changed spark plugs and leads mechanic unable to find leak

you may have a blown head gasket ... water can get into a cylinder .. that would cause the rough running and the water goes out the exhaust .. thats why you cant find the leak .. often as the engine is running you will see bubbles in the radiator .. thats exhaust gas getting into the water jacket ... you may also see a little steam in the exhaust (white smoke) ..
