New catalytic converter gets red hot

Baffle system? When exhaust gets red hot, usually means your catalytic converter is clogged, but, ive seen instances where a muffler had gotten clogged and was doing the same thing! Aside from the, air/fuel mixture being off could also potentially cause this!

YOU HAVE A HONEST EXHAUST GUY, BUT YOU MIGHT WANT A MORE EXPERENCED MECHANIC. THAT CAN CHECK THE PROBLEM OUT CORRECTLY

Check for computer error codes with an OBDII scan tool - it'll probably tell you that the catalytic converter is failing, but it won't also tell you that your engine is probably badly worn so you're seeing oil smoke - when the catalytic gets hot enough, it fully burns off the oil smoke so you won't see it any more. Meanwhile, your oil level is probably dropping pretty fast.

You're burning oil and it takes the catalytic converter a bit to start doing that for you. Something's come unsealed!
It's common enough; try to sort valve clearances and EGR/turbo obstructions by looking at the computer log, then if not sorted pick a date to pop the head and seals off and place seals anew. Nice car.

You should never drive a car with a red hot catalytic converter. If the catalytic converter is heater up to the point where it is that hot, it could be a serious fire hazard. Cars which might have a leak in a fuel line could be at a major risk for a fire or explosion if gas fumes come into contact with a catalytic converter in that condition. -----------------------------------------------------------------

yes this could be the fault but you would have a light on the dash in the shape of an engine this is the eml light>engine managment light)this is the computer he is talking about unfortunatley yes it could be costlyit has a lot of miles on it hope this helps you
