What is the fuse labeled as in the booklet? Try opening all the way and closing each door while watching the instrument cluster display. It could be a door wire harness. It could be a door latch, so slam each door a couple times. With a good fuse installed try unlocking drivers door from the outside key hole twice and keep it turned the second time. This should role down the windows. If they role down then it's probably the window switch.
That would be in the steering column, would remove all the cover on column, until you can see as much of wiring as possible, install fuse and with goggles on watch for spark in column when reset
Button is pushed. Maybe you can locate bad wire and insulate. This is not most safe procedure but maybe the only way except replacing the entire column wiring harness.
Sound simple but you have a short in the circuit. Unless u have knowledge & wiring diagrams of the car......DONT TOUCH IT. Take it in

Folks, Just found my problem ...... There's a flexible conduit (corrugated rubber sleeve) between the driver's door and the door arch which contains the wiring loom for the drivers door central locking/door speaker/electric windows/mirrors etc....discovered when I slipped off the sleeve that 4 cables in the wiring loom had broken due to repeated flexing when drivers door was opened/closed over the years (2001 Audi A4). Resoldered broken wires and insulated same....now working better than ever again ...ie dashboard back lighting seems brighter than it had been for some time? Also drivers door loudspeaker is back in action again (hadn't noticed that it had gone).
It's kinda difficult to reseat the rubber sleeving correctly after the repair job...will probably use some silicone sealant on the sleeve to ensure that there is no water ingress to wiring loom afterwards. I'm not too impressed with Audi design people after that, should have used cable that has a better flexibility rating (esp on drivers door!).
Paul.
SOURCE: 1998 Audi A6 sunroof is will close only half way.
make it go back to the open position, look down the side of the tracks in the roof that the sun shade slides in and you will probable find the guides for the sunshade are jamming up the tracks. only way to replace them<4 one in each corner> is to remove the glass section and then close sunshade that will give access to the 4 guides which are available from dealer as a kit

roll down the window. and take the interior panel off. on the inside of the door at the morror there is a plastick cover that clips out(remove it) there is foam on the iside remove that aswell. you sould see a bolt or a skrew once loose the mirror will come out. while loosening it hold the mirror in your free hand they some times just fall off.

My subaru came with a special wrench for working the sunroof manually, the access is under the dome light or the header control trim piece. I'm sure the VW has something similar.
