Replacing a daihatsu terios timing belt

Am an old backyard machanic and gave fitted many a timing chain on older cars. I will have to change the timing 'belt' on my 1300 Terios. I assume that it's similar to changing the timing 'chain' on older cars?

The procedure of aligning all the timing marks before removing the belt will be the same . The necessity of not moving crank and cams without the belt being connected is still relevant. How ever there are some differences as to tensioning the belt and timing balance shafts . The biggest killer of rubber belts is oil so the oil seals (Cams shaft/ crank shaft should be also replaced and hydraulic tensioner if you have one). Idler pulleys do as much work as the belt so replacing them to replace the bearings is also a good move. . To come up to speed as to the differences a workshop manual for your vehicle is strongly recommended.

Can someone please be able to advise me on how I find out which AUX belt to purchase for my Daihatsu Terios. There seems to be numerous different ones and my existing belt does not have a number on.

If you can measure the belt circumference, you can order a new one with the same circumference. You can do this while the belt is on the car using a simple piece of string or rope. Wrap string around the belt routing, remove it, lay out out flat and measure it.

Then note whether you have a "V" belt or a ribbed belt (note number of ribs) to be sure you get an exact match. Finally, you can measure the width of the belt.

With all that information, you should be able to get close enough to reliably order a replacement. All belts stretch somewhat so there's always a slight margin for error if you don't get it exact.

Also, if you know which belt it is and the make and model of your car, you should be able to order off a website that has a database and cross reference for these things. That's how I get replacement belts for my 35 year old BMW.

When is the timing chain of a 2007 1.5 4x4 daihatsu terios changed?

Timing chains do not need changed until they break or get so loose that they jump a tooth on the chain. But if you have a timing belt instead of a timing chain, it does need to be changed before it breaks. Replace the timing belt every 60,000 miles. Severe engine damage will occur if you do not replace the timing belt every 60,000 miles.
