I know, the video isn't an SC but it shows how you don't need that much room at the bottom. I have an 04 sc430 - love it but haven't had to change trunk struts yet. Good luck.
There are a couple of lexus forums that can be very helpful links beneath video...
it should just be a bolt on the end of the ball you need a thin wrench. or it could be a clip on the older ones that goes over the ball pop iy off with a screwdriver
Problem sloved. Get this guys video. I did, saved me thousands. He works on a 2001 Lexus RX 300, but I'm sure it will work on your vehicle. He shows your where to buy the lifts brand new for $21 a piece and walks you through the installation. Here's a link.

Yes, the struts are probably bad. They can become hard to compress as well as lose air with age. Cost to replace should be less than 60 if you can turn the wrench.
The trunk lift supports (struts) come fully extended. Install one end of the strut and then push up or open the trunk until the other end of the strut lines up with the ball stud and snap it on. If you cannot open the trunk far enough to line up the ball stud then you have gotten the wrong struts. Hope this helps.
