Key turns freely in ignition. Problem first occurred after stopping car. Could not turn off engine. Had to force a stall to stop engine running. Accessories still turned on. Had to disconnect battery to stop it going flat overnight. Tried reconnecting battery today, but engine wouldn't start. Key still turning freely in lock. Nothing turned over. Battery may be dead..? Is this a simple fix? Will I need to replace the ignition lock?
What most people refer to as the "Ignition switch" is really the "cylinder lock", that when turned with the key, operates the actual "ignition switch".
The switch causing your problem is inside the steering column, and the column needs to be at least partly disassembled to access it.

I just have a basic toolkit. Will I need any specialised tools to fix this? ...Or isit best to take it to a mechanic?
You might want to take it to a mechanic. I offered this suggestion because I had an ignition switch go out on me before, with similar results as you described, BUT your problem COULD be something else!
I fixed it! :) After removing the plastic cover, I found a loose screw on the opposite site of the cylinder lock. Once I tightened that, the key started connecting with the switch again, and everything seems fine. Fingers crossed! Thanks again, Strech, for your help. :)

Check the switch at the bottom of the steering lock has not unscrewed.

drian the gas and let it sit for a couple of hours. make sure ALL liquid is out of the tank. do that because there might be some water in the gas.

autozone can tell you what is wrong but only if the light is on, they can check your alternator, battery and even your starter for no charge.

Sounds like the solenoid. You know you have Roadside Assistance with your new Hyundai. Have it towed in and get it diagnosed & repaired under warranty.

sometimes the selenoid when going out will do that, work right away then not catch for several trys, you might take it in to be tested or just replace it most are not very expensive unless it is directly on the starter then you have to replace starter to get new selenoid

Check that the battery connections are secure. Are any of the interior lights or radio coming on?

It's actually a 2000 Hyundai Excel. I selected the wrong year in the title...

After typing my last comment, I wondered about the linkage coming loose. You might want to try putting a drop of LocTite (blue) on the screw threads so it doesn't happen again.
