Overheating/no heat It has been below freezing lately and on 2 occasions my temperature gauge has redlined. The first time it acually dropped to the normal level after coasting for a moment, and the second it continued until i pulled over and stopped the car. Also, and i feel as though this is related, even when the temperature gauge was redlined, my car was not pushing any heat through the vents. Until recently the car has put out heat ok.

My first guess is the cooling system is low on liquid coolant. That would cause both symptoms. The radiator can be low even if the overflow tank is full. The cooling system can have air pockets.

Testimonial: "That was my first thought, I just wanted some verification. Seems my hood release is also frozen shut, so as soon as i get that thawed I'll check this first. Thank you very much, will poast again if this doesnt help"

SOURCE: antifreeze ts boiling back into reservoir.

it sounds like a possible head gasket problem,you can get the fluctuation from combustion gases getting pumped into your cooling system and creating gas pockets,i would suggest taking it to a shop and have them do a block test to look for combustion in the cooling system to confirm the problem,that way you will know for sure,if it comes up negative they can also perform a flow test to make sure there is no restriction in the cooling system such as a plugged radiator or a bad thermostat,hope this sheds a little light on it

Testimonial: "I bet you've hit on the problem ! Car has been "using " antifreeze for a couple years now, with no leaking anywhere. Lost through the head gasket ?"

SOURCE: 2001 chevy monte carlo is overheating when driving

Hi;
If your engine cools down when moving fast, you either have a problem with your water pump or your electric fans that cool off your radiator and a/c condenser. This is controlled by a temperature switch, but these fans should kick on instantly when A/C is selected.

What is cause of temperature gauge indicating overheating and steam coming from engine and coolant leaking?

First off you are going to need a engine or a full rebuild if the temp gauge redlined.. The cause could be numerous things but if it was steaming from the back of the motor then it's either heater core hose busted or blown freeze plug.

My 03 Saturn VUE water temp overheat light never turns off.

Possible that the ECT (engine coolant temperature sensor) is faulty, or the wiring to it has been compromised. Try looking the wiring over. If nothing jumps out at you, replace the sensor. Keep in mind, it's the season for critters to seek warmth from engine heat.

I have a problem with my car Peugeot 207 1.4 8 valve petrol which was serviced and had changed thermostat. Everything was fine until winter started, at temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius temperature...

This is totally normal. All radiators contain an antifreeze/ antiboil component when filled as per manufacturers instructions. This stabilizers the temp of the coolant, reducing fluctuations in temperature. The thermostat is heat responsive. Basically a piece of spring steel heated to a temperature then cooled, so as to retain the memory of when to react. Replacing the water temp sensor on this occasion was probably unnecessary, tho in saying that, I have replaced mine & friends with beneficial results.

1986 honda accord lx at red line on temp gauge

Hi dakota_love what we need to verify is if your cooling fan is operating properly, what you need to do is first bring temperature close to redline
(but don't hit redline it may cause a blown head gasket) than you need to open up the hood with the engine running (and temperature close to redline)at and see if any of the cooling fan in front of the radiator is coming on, please update once this part of diag. is completed so we know which way to direct for further diagnostic.
