front tank is full of fuel but truck will not run off that tank.but after several hrs of sitting or driving it builds pressure in front tank and pushes the fuel out of filler neck.rear tank is working fine.

On the left hand frame rail ahead of the front tank there is a valve that controls which tank the truck runs off of it is bad let me know how you make out
p.s. if you dont wantto replace right away just run the tank that over fills down first and monitor when you switch over to the other one

  • Anonymous Jun 02, 2009

if you want to fix with out replacing the valve and the front tank you can get repair ends that fit the uick connects you will need a 5/16 and a 3/8 then go to local hardware store and get compression ends with threads on oppisite end and cap them off. remove front tank and install plugs you can then leave front tank out. you can aslo put flare nuts on the repair ends and flare them and install coupler with plug if you have tool to flare them let me know if you need anything else

Was the fuel check valve recall performed on this truck? These are similar symptoms to the recall in which gas would pump from one tank to another.

Why is fuel spitting out of filler neck on a 2011 jeep wrangler long before tank is full?

Lots of vehicle fuel tanks are shaped to fit the available space and often the filler doesn't feed into the top of the tank therefore fuel spitting from the filler neck would be a feature - except these days most manufacturers fit a vent hose from the top of the tank to the filler neck causing most such vehicles to fill cleanly.

If your fuel tank has such a vent hose it is probably blocked - perhaps was trapped during the fitting of the fuel tank.

03 mercury marquis evap system/cant get gas to go into tank and I have replaced all parts possible

Ok you need to run it down to almost empty then have the filler neck removed from the body and with the hose in the tank and check for an obstruction inside it or crushed bypass tube in the filler neck if you don't find anything the fuel tank pressure valve is no good but it sounds like someone shoved something into the filler neck or its now further down into the first tank inlet baffle causing the gas to not enter the tank and climb back up into the filler neck causing the gas pump pressure sensor in the nozzle to constantly keep tripping at the gas station so you need to take out the filler neck and investigate it and the very beginning of the tank where the rubber gasket is there might be a rag shoved in there blocking the fuel entry especially if you have had problems with somebody recently or you think your mechanic is responsible to keep you paying when checking inside the tank you must not use any metals except brass it will not spark or a woodengine dowel to see if you feel something in there please post back everything that you have replaced to give me a better idea ok and if you can't do this get a guy to do it a 6 pack and a meatball hero/sub/hoagie whatever you call it will help and make sure he has big feet you never know right ha ha good luck

Evap system

The FSM is clear on this. each hose and fitting must be air tight.
or the the car vents gas fumes full time, and the EVAP ECU tests
(monitor) make sure this all works.
you can just look at the left and right side above rear tires. and see
if your hands are small enough to fit here. Id bet not.
some mech, report, the tank can be tilted down at front (drained fuel)
and gain access.
keep in mind, you get fuel siphoning at any time. do not open the system, with fuel in the tank, and then drive to autozone,
i loosen the gas cap so that pressure can not build in tank.
expanding fuel can push fuel out , during a filter change. very
dangerous in a garage, and you gone.
it's just a vent hose, you can see, it and what needs to be done is really obvious. given you arms sides and lenght.
my fsm states, " TANK pull"

Removal & Installation

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the fuel filler cap from the fuel tank.
  3. Have a Class B fire extinguisher near the work area. Use a hand operated pump device to drain as much fuel through the fuel filler neck as possible.
  4. Use a siphon to remove the remainder of the fuel in the tank by connecting the siphon to the fuel pump outlet fitting.
CAUTION Never drain or store fuel in an open container because there is the possibility of a fire or an explosion.
  5. Reinstall the fuel filler cap.
  6. Remove the rear seat cushion from vehicle (if so equipped).
  7. Disconnect the fuel pump motor connector and sending unit electrical connectors.
  8. Disconnect the wire harness grommet and harness through the vehicle floor pan.
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10. Remove the fuel filler hose clamp from the filler neck assembly.
  11. Remove the fuel breather hose clamp from the filler neck assembly.
  12. Remove the fuel filter inlet hose clamp and hose from the filter.
NOTE A small amount of fuel may be released after the fuel hose is disconnected. In order to reduce the chance of personal injury, cover the fitting to be disconnected with a shop towel.
  13. Remove the fuel vapor clamp and hose, and fuel return hose clamps and hose from the respective fuel lines.
  14. Using a suitable transaxle jack, support the fuel tank.
  15. Remove the fuel tank retaining bolts and lower the tank.
To install:
  1. Reconnect all fuel hoses, lines and the fuel breather hose to the fuel tank.
  2. Place the fuel tank in its proper space using the transaxle jack, Install the fuel tank retaining bolts.
  3. Remove the transaxle jack.
  4. Reconnect all fuel hoses, lines and the fuel breather hose to the fuel tank.
  5. Install the fuel breather hose and hose clamp to the filler neck assembly.
  6. Install the fuel vapor hose and hose clamps. Install the fuel return hose and hose clamp to the respective fuel lines.
  7. Install the fuel filter inlet hose and hose clamp to the filter.
  8. Lower the vehicle. Install the wire harness and grommet through the vehicle floor pan.
  9. Connect the fuel pump motor and the sending unit connectors.
  10. Install the rear seat cushion. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

No service engine light? A loose gas cap will set a light.
You may want to inspect your fuel filler neck and anything close. For a long while its not uncommon for a person to report the fuel odor issue and have it be where some low life cut a filler neck or puntured a tank to steal fuel. But if that were the case there would usually be a service engine or gas cap light as the systems now days monitor pressures so they can detect leaks in the Evap system.

When you mention a smell though under the hood, do you think the smell could be exhaust? I have seen those manifolds crack. or maybe just a leak from a gasket or exhaust donut.

I sounds like you have an electrical problem with the dashboard. It will have to be pulled and checked.

I had the same problem with the gas tank on my 95 mustang. You are going to have to drop the tank. There is a rubber seal where the filler neck goes into the gas tank that has failed and must be replaced. You are losing even more gas than you think. Everytime you make a left turn gas is sloshing out through that bad seal.

Dodge dakota 2005 -check engine light(gas cap)gas cap was replaced.Fuel spills out when filling tank.Fuel lines were smoked and no clog was found.

There is a check valve in the filler hose to stop fuel from coming out seems yours might be stuck , run a metal coat hangers inside the filler neck while prying open the little fill flap. see if that helps OR you are not or have no VENT to AIR in your evap system causing excessive tank pressure.

I have fuel leaking from the filler neck. Is this

sounds like the fuel tank is building up pressure because of gas expansion. See if the fuel vent line is bent or kinked, if this is o.k change your fuel cap.
