All shift indicator lights are on. (PRND123)
Trans bangs when put into Reverse or Drive.
Trans does not shift up or down. I would guess it is stuck in 3rd gear. Even when I shift manually, no change in gear.
Tranny could be bad or the switch that indicates position not only to the start circuit and the backup lights. and allows the car to be started in neutral. whis swich can bind and may need replaced as it when removed should turn with little or no resistance

Hi, check that the cable is attached to the gear selector on the trans and does the shift quadrant move as it usually did.... not sticking or stiff in it's movement. Auto's are basically a hydraulic pump forcing oil in through valves and galleries in the valve body,,,, it could be that a gallery is blocked or that a valve has jammed shut..... check all electrical connectors for a proper fit..... do all the lights on the shift indicator light up as normal, no engine check light coming on ?
Cv joints usually knock or click, especially when turning. Open the hood, start the engine and while looking at the engine from the drivers seat put foot on brake and shift to reverse. if the engine jumps, must have a bad mount. also may try giving it a little gas while holding brake to make sure. also try it it drive as well. chances are its the trans mount going bad.
note: if there are any oil leaks that are getting the mount wet it will continue to fail.
On the 1995 Jimmy, the shift cable can come loose on the mount on the side of the transmission where the cable meets the trans. When it slips, the alignment goes off and causes the driver to not be able to put the trans into park. If you take a long stick you can push the shift arm on the trans to the park position and your trans will go into park.....what you (and I) really need to know is how to take the shift cable mount apart and reset it.
This is a common problem and the issue is with the display of the gear selector, it must be replaced. You will need to remove the cluster form the car and send it into a GM approved repair center for replacement of the display.
their is no relay only a range switch which is located on the drivers side of the trans. sandwiched behind the shift cable lever, it has two plugs that plug into the rear of it, these switches are susceptible to water intrusion, I have replaced many of them
First check fluid. Make sure it's full and clean and does not smell burned (compare to another good car) Converter failure is usually most obvious when trans shifts to OD. if shift is late or makes bang noise going in, you likely have a problem. to check lockup, after od engages, lightly touch brake, trans should momentarily shift out of od. Whining is usually due to low fluid. Also check transfer case and both differentials for proper level and leaks.
