Most , guys will just assume the engine is ok, that is has good compression with fingers crossed and then
1:operators guide, use WOT cranking to unflood, it. oops don't start.
2: so, checks spark to all cylinders. no spark no run.... ever.
3: if spark is good, he tries test fuel.
fails, mech then he thinks, gee , is engine really good? hummmm
id does use the strobe light to sees spark is landing right.
No, it is not?, must be cam timing slip. belt or change (belts fail 10x chains but owners ignore the chain screaming, sooooo)

ok timing (both) is good, he pulls 1 spark plug , omg , these are 10 years old
he says,,, and black and soaking in gas, tuneuptime.
ok they all look good, and runs on test fuel now. then stalls in 3sec.
well, bad fueling (ask why, much longer story,,,,,,,,,,!!!!)

05 ford ranger started knocking and shut off now won't crank. What is wrong?

Started knocking and shut off ? Now will not start?
That sounds bad - check fluids - engine oil and coolant - those three symptoms can indicate overheating (either by lack of coolant or engine oil).
Did either fluid get low AND does the engine oil look contaminated - milky colored and way overful.
Not Start? Does it turn the engine and just not fire up running?
Or does the engine not turn over at all?
If the engine is siezed - you can tell by the electrical power needed to crank the engine - turn on the lights and try to crank the engine - if all you hear from the starter is a click and all the lights dim - that means a lot of power is needed like:
1. the battery doesn't have enough power - jump start to verify
2. or it requires more power to turn the engine than the battery can provide - engine siezed - try turning the engine by hand with socket/wrench to verify.
I hope your engine is not siezed - if so - hope you still have warranty coverage on the powertrain.
Please let me know what you find and if this helps?

Engine turns over but will not start.

Hi there:

When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored in the engine control module. These DTCs remain even if the light goes out. To address a Check Engine Light problem, the DTCs are retrieved and the appropriate troubleshooting information is followed in order to determine the problem.

Just scanned the computer and send us code number find it.

Hope helps.

My car turns over good, acts like it might turn on then continues to turn. I figure it might be fuel filter since low fuel light had come on.Or could it be th fuel pump got hot and is not working properly?

common problem is turning car off with engine not reaching normal operating temp and floods engine. try this. DE-CHOKING PROCEDURE WHEN ENGINE CRANKS BUT DOES NOT START
If the engine does not start, try the following procedure to start the engine using the de-choke mode.
Failure to do so may aggravate the no start condition.
1. Depress and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor and crank the engine for 7-8 seconds. (This will clean out any unburned fuel from the combustion chamber)
2. Release the ignition key to stop cranking.
3. Release the accelerator pedal and start the engine. If the engine starts while performing Step 1 the engine will rev up. Immediately release the ignition key to stop cranking and remove your foot from the accelerator pedal.
^ Do not keep holding the ignition switch in the START position over 10 seconds if the engine does not start. This may result in a weakened or dead battery.
^ Avoid racing the engine or sudden take off right after starting the engine.
^ If the engine still fails to start following the De-choking procedure, have your vehicle inspected by your Mazda Dealer.

for your info there is a recall for this problem. contact mazda.

I have a 2000 Jetta 4 cylinder, 2.0 engine. It starts fine when it has not been started but once the engine gets hot and car is completely turned off it won't start. It sounds like it wants to start but...

Hi.. I had a very similar problem recoverrd to are workshop by the A.A around a month ago.
Exactly the same problem (left to cool started.? Once worm or hot engine just turning over ?)
Afdter reading all known folts and finding nothing to do with what I'd wanted. It took some time ?
Cutting it sort if found when I replaced a intermittent faulty fuel relay and run till engine hot (untill cooling fan cut in) Then turned off engine .. on turning key to see if this had cured my problem?
The engine started frist turn of key after repeating this a number of times .. this car was now starting fine (whether hot or cold)
Problem fixed..
Hopefully this will be of some help to yourselves

Engine will turn over, but will not start

Suggestion, don;t try and start the car with the gas pedal pushed to the floor. Asking for trouble in the future.

Could be a fuel pump, clogged fuel filter.

Check engine light on? If so, Have the code read/scanned at your mechanic, or your local auto parts superstore.
