SOURCE: 1998 Nissian Altima Not starting

Nothing by either party was said about the starter. The battery and wires can all be in great shape, and if they are and the owner hears a clicking noise when trying to start it its a pretty good bet they may have a starter that's locked up.

One good 'ole trick on those starters. If you can reach the starter, a couple of sharp rapes with a hammer will have it starting again, then you know it time to replace the starter.

SOURCE: 1995 Nissan Altima - replacing alternator

Yes.  Have him purchase a Haines or Chiltons Manual at Auto Zone or similar store.  I have changed 2 alternators on my 95 Altima in my time and I am not an expert mechanic.  Also check out:

Pretty good primer for the novice.

I did not remove the belt all the way. Merely slipped it off the old alternator pulley and then slip the new alternator onto the old belt and then tightened/adjust the belt as needed when done.
Good luck.

Hello I have 1998 nissan altima and my question is, what would cause me to lose all electrical power? No dash lights and wont crank.

Sounds like a failed alternator to me. The alt powers everything when running. If failed the battery takes over, then dies leaving no power source and no start. Charge the battery start the car and put a volt meter across the battery. When running it should read 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If it is reading around 12, your alternator has failed.

M 1998 nissan altima will only start if i jump it.

Did you clean the terminals off when you changed the battery? How about the wires into the terminals? Is the new battery any good? I have seen brand new batteries, dead, check all this stuff out. The voltage should be over 12, and the electrolytes should all be good, get one of those little things with the floaty balls in them, they will tell you real quick if a cell is dead or not. Stab the volt tester into the battery posts and then into the terminal ends of the wires, and see if they are the same. If that doesn't do it, does it have a coil? or a spark ignitor thing? I forgot what it is called.

The battery light and brake light and engine noise on my 2003 Nissan Altima.

Hello and thank you for using FixYa!

When those 2 lights come on, it's normally a alternator not charging properly. I would have it checked to verify.

Thanks Jay!

1998 Nissan Altima GXE squealing noise

Could be the bearings in your alternator have gone dry and your alternator is about to quit out on you. I had a friend with an 01 altima and we could always hear him coming before we saw him because of this very problem. Changed the alternator out and noise went away. Thanks for using FixYa!
