My jeep grand cherokee tends to idle high in park. It should be at 500rpm but it is at 1000rpm. Also, while driving between 60 to 70mph, the rpm's are usually at 2000, but it will rise to 2300rpm, then back to 2000rpm frequently. I'm not revving up the engine nor am I pressing/relieving the gas peddle. Basically the same problem. Jeep idles at high rpms on occasion, and will rev engine while driving. Often revs engine from 200 to 500 rpms higher while driving with or without cruise control on at highway speeds.

Check Engine Light does not come on. Engine revs but does not increase speed. Sounds and feels like it may be coming out of gear or losing torque.
I took my 2004 Grand Cherokee back to the dealer and explained the problem I was having with the engine reving while driving. The service manager told me they performed an "update" on the computer. He didn't want to say it had a glitch but said it had developed a small problem. I'm not sure what they did exactly, and I have only driven the car home from the dealer (about 25 miles), but problem seems to have been fixed. Absolutely no problems on the drive home. A definite improvement.
Is your check engine light on?
