According to this it is a know issue and the gauge has a reset procedure.

Do you know what a wiring diagram is ? How to use a DMM - digital multi-meter to diagnose automotive electrical circuit's ? Looking at a wiring diagram to see what all is involved in the starter circuit , main battery cables , park neutral safety switch , starter relay etc.. Find video's on youtube . Do you have a manual or automatic trans. ? The purple wire get's B+ voltage from the starter relay in the underhood fuse / relay box .
Relays rarely go bad. Most likely to neutral safety /range selector switch is bad. Under the truck on the drivers side. Mounted to the transmission, under the shifter cable.
You may need a repair manual to fix this. A mechanic would check the relays and electrical components for power when the truck will not start. A relay, the coil, or other part is getting hot and breaking a circuit. If it is loosing spark to the plugs, could be several things in the ignition system.
Check to see if you have compression on all cylinders. If you don't, replace the timing chain/belt. If you do check the ignition relay and fuse panel for blown fuses.
i have a 1996 gmc sanoma will be driving normal engine just shuts off as if you just turned switch off. will re start after few seconds when i turn ignition off then re start
