I have a 2002 Kia Spectra. Aug 2008, my engine check light came on and my car would surge, or the RPM's would increase, at stop lights. Kia dealer replaced a sensor which was not covered by Power train warranty. Yesterday, it started doing the same thing and engine light is on. I saw on website there have been many issues of this same sort. How does one really know which sensor needs to be fixed to correct the problem? I noticed that one person themselves replaced the coolant Temp sensor and it seems to be working now. I was, today, going to have Autozone check my codes, which they'll do for free. And I was going to take car to dealer Monday; I'm really broke and I don't want to get into a lot of repairs and this seems to be a commmon problemm among Kias. I love my Kia; any suggestions?

If the check engine light is going on and off then it is very highly likely pointing to a misfire, and this could be due to any number of things, and your best bet by far is to have a code read done as this will give you information as to the cause of the problem, if not point you directly at the problem itself.

It could be coil packs, spark plugs, injectors, crank sensor, cam sensor, any number of things.

This could be a timing belt as well. have they looked at that as possibility. Sometimes the belt just jumps teeth causing it to still run just not correct.

evap purge valve fault is your p0443
p1693 is manu. controlled aux input output fault
p1693 is a code for an open or short to ground for the check engine light
does it light up when key is on? if so then it is a left over code from some previous repair attemt
the evap code wont prevent starting
check for broken timing belt
check for fuel in tank and that it has proper fuel pressure
