After driving my car for fourty minutes and the I turn it off, go inside for ten minutes, come out to start it again. sometimes it starts, but will die when I try to put it in reverse. Then it smells like gas. sometimes it will start then die in park. sometimes it wont start at all. if I let it cool down for twenty to thirty minutes it starts fine, but always smells like gas for the first five minutes when driving
Most likely causes are bad engine coolant temp sensor OR leaking fuel injectors. Bad engine coolant temp sensor will give computer false reading and computer provides wrong air fuel mixture. Leaking fuel injectors will load the engine with raw gas--just like flooding it. Try pushing the gas pedal to the floor and holding it there when cranking when hot. That forces the computer into "clear flood" mode and it shuts off the injectors. If it starts up with pedal down, that would be a sign of leaking injectors.

Sounds like you are having a fuel problem with the fuel filter. If you have not had your car serviced in quite awhile i would do so. At least change the fuel filter and check the air filter as well. Hope thias will help you.

I think this is a classic example of a faulty air flow meter . These can be rather expensive , so take your car to your garage and have the system scanned - just to be on the safe side .
You could try disconnecting the air flow meter electrical plug and then start your engine , this should improve your symptoms but not completely . Nevertheless this could help you confirm if the air flow meter is faulty or not .
I hope this helps
