85 volvo dl fuel evaporative control functional (failed) @ smog check

To start engine needs air, compression, ignition, fuel.

Start checking the various areas.

locate the fuel pump relay sounds like the culprit.

NO Diesel engines dont have spark plugs so dont worry about it as the ones you have should be ok BUT first check the length of the plug thread to the ones you took out, are they the same as they have to be the correct length and not any diffreance also the earth tip on the end
If they look the same 100% your ok to go. RON

does your battery hold charge or check to see if its charging above 13 volts

Fuel pump relay,controls the power to the system,its an small wt box mounted under dash on P/S foot well.

Check the fuse to the injector. If it is out or got wet, it could mimic these conditions. let me know what happens. I have an 85 model.

FRONT DEFROSTER IS VACCUM OPERATED, ON PASSENGER SIDE REMOVE PANLE TO THE CENTER CONSOLE, YOU'LL SEE A CANISTES SHAPED IN TENNIS BALS IN SECUENCE, START THERE TO CHECK FOR VACCUM PROBLEM.
REAR DEFROSTER/WIPER/WASHER ON HATCH.OPEN REAR HATCH ON DRIVER'S SIDE HINGE YOU'LL SEE A WIRING HARNES GOIN THROUGH USUALLY THAT HARNES BRAKES , LOOSING CONTACT TO ALL OF THE ELECTRICALS IN HATCH DOOR, EASY REPAIR. REMOVE HINGE GET SOMETHING TO HOLD HATC OPEN, LIKE LONG BROOM.PULL OUT HARNES AND REPAIR.GOOD LUCK

Check all fuses. Check the fuel injector fuse. Make sure the fuse and fuse holder are clean. Then pull the connector from the mass air flow sensor. If it is bad it will prevent the car from starting. The car may run rough without it but at least it will start. Let me know.

One or both fuel pumps may need to be replaced. Check fuel pressure and flow volume.
