I have a 2002 Toyota Celica GT with an Automatic Transmission about about 84,000 miles on it. Within the last month, it started shifting funny. I'll start driving and the first two times it shifts, it's normal. when it should shift the third time, it won't. I mean i can cruise at about 65 mph, and the tach will stay at about 3500 to 4000 rpm's. After about 10 minutes or so, the car will finally shift and continue to drive normally. It only does this when i initially drive the car. A friend recommended a transmission flush, which i have done. It is still doing it, and today the check engine light came on. I'm getting it read shortly...any ideas what the problem is? I have the same problem for my 02 celica GT. Whens i hit around 40mph i feel like it tries to down shift and the engine acts weird. It has been over a year since my last transmission fluid change. The check engine light was on, but it was due to the o2 sensor. Will fixing the o2 sensor fix the transmission problem?
I had the same problem, replacing you thermostat should do the trick, i spent 8.99 on a new thermostat and 99 cents on a seal. For some reason engine temperature affects the transmission shifting. Good luck
A bad oxygen sensor will effect performance of the engine.see if engine dont run right it effect the transmission.replace the 02 sensor.

oxgen sensor. if it idles rough...sometimes close to stalling, but as soon as you give it gas she runs okay.... then it may be the oxygen sensor.

sounds like a dirty fuel fiter. Start with cheapest fixes first. if not that maybe fuel pump is going bad.?

Automatic transmission are complex systems. The shifting of gears is based on a number of things like bands, speed, acceleration, deceleration, manifold back pressure, RPMs, temperature, etc.
Sometimes the electrical ground connection for the transmission can become corroded which causes poor shifting.
Since you are getting an error code, you should get a readout for it. Many auto supply store like Advance Auto will loan a meter for you to get a readout. Call up some stores to find one.
