Noticed a little smoke coming from the engine after parking at the store. Opened the hood (slowly) and it smelled like something burning. Got under the car and saw a bead of oil on the exhaust pipe. Checked the oil, and it was at normal level, but stopped and got a quart anyways. When I went to put it in, the opening was smoking when I removed the oil filler cap. How bad does it sound for the home team?
SOURCE: White smoke exhaust
White smoke is caused by coolant or water coming out the tail pipe. There is a chance that the white smoke was caused by water splashing up from a puddle onto the exhaust pipe. Keep an eye on the coolant level in the radiator in any event. If its less then there leak coolant leak in the car engine which is causing this problem....

You cannot check the transmission fluid in the Trooper w/o putting it on a lift. The dip stick is not accessable under the hood.
I had a similar problem with my Trooper cutting off and eventually had to replace the starter. Would recommend that you take it in before you get stranded w/o a starter (like I did).
Any trouble with your CD player? I have a CD stuck in mine - it makes a horrible clicking noise for about 2 minutes everytime I start the car and I can't seem to get it out.

This sounds like severe engine damage, do to loss of internal lubrication (no oil). That's the bad thing about 'idiot' warning lights, they come on when u have a severe problem, and the damage is done. You are going to probably have to purchase a used engine from an auto salvage yard, or purchase a re -manufactured engine. Sorry for the bad news, this is about as bad as it gets.

he's right. you have 2 options, replace motor or rebild it. either way it's not cheap. good luck

If your are reaching 4500 rpm, your'e working it pretty hard.
Have you checked the PCV system(including the air filter)?
Many engines in recent production are using very low viscosity oil and have lower standards for oil control.
Some manufacturers are responding that there are no set specifications for oil consupmtion.
You might try changing the oil and using the highest viscosity your owners manual permits.
Keep check frequently, add oil as needed, it's cheaper than rebuilding.
