Hi have a BMW e46 318i 2001, 4 times over the last 2 months it has cut out while i was driving, if i left it for an hour or so it would start back up again with no problems.
I have no fault codes or lights on, it is driving me mad!!!!!!
Short answer is yes it would. Not the only thing it could be but to answer your question, yes.
If there are no fault codes it would be a good idea to test drive the vehicle whilst graphic live data. The idea being that a drop-out to zero should be visible from the crank sensor when the engine blips or cuts out. The cranki sensor should of course not drop below 650 at worst but it is a zero you are looking for. This may not happen every time so you will have to witness the fault at least three times or so whilst graphing. The trick is, if it does completely cut out you have to look closely at the data to see if the crank hitting zero was in fact the cause of the cut out or effect as the engine stopped. depending how fast a refresh rate your scope or machine has you can see how quickly the drop out is. Obviously it should not be instantaneous as this would indicate a fault. I think you get where I'm coming from now. sorry for the rush only at work at the minute :-P Good luck
