Would a crankshaft sensor fault cause my BMW to just cut out?

If there are no fault codes it would be a good idea to test drive the vehicle whilst graphic live data. The idea being that a drop-out to zero should be visible from the crank sensor when the engine blips or cuts out. The cranki sensor should of course not drop below 650 at worst but it is a zero you are looking for. This may not happen every time so you will have to witness the fault at least three times or so whilst graphing. The trick is, if it does completely cut out you have to look closely at the data to see if the crank hitting zero was in fact the cause of the cut out or effect as the engine stopped. depending how fast a refresh rate your scope or machine has you can see how quickly the drop out is. Obviously it should not be instantaneous as this would indicate a fault.
