If there are no fault codes it would be a good idea to test drive the vehicle whilst graphic live data. The idea being that a drop-out to zero should be visible from the crank sensor when the engine blips or cuts out. The cranki sensor should of course not drop below 650 at worst but it is a zero you are looking for. This may not happen every time so you will have to witness the fault at least three times or so whilst graphing. The trick is, if it does completely cut out you have to look closely at the data to see if the crank hitting zero was in fact the cause of the cut out or effect as the engine stopped. depending how fast a refresh rate your scope or machine has you can see how quickly the drop out is. Obviously it should not be instantaneous as this would indicate a fault. I think you get where I'm coming from now. sorry for the rush only at work at the minute :-P Good luck

Bmw 3 series electrical faults

Hi sounds like the same problem I had crankshaft sensor my battery light came on and the engine would cut out sometimes would start straight away other times took 5mins to start again.
But would get a garage to check fault codes costs about 40pound but could save you 100's as it may be a faulty alternator/battery.

I need to now ware area of engine is crankshaft sensor 525i 2001 bmw

Hi rafymoctezum,

The crankshaft sensor for your car is located near the starter. The best way to see it is to remove the driver's side microfilter housing and connected air tube. If you are looking at the starter, the crankshaft sensor is located to the right and is held in place with a 5mm allen bolt.

Hi i have a 318i bmw 2001 my fuel consumption is

Last month, my wife complained of high gas usage as well. I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten to change the air filter the last time I did the oil change. It had been over 5 months since I'd put a new one in. So, we got a new air filter, and monitored the usage, and it was back to normal again. Maybe try this?

BMW 320iSE E46 2001

The 3 series suffer badly from camshaft sensors and on your vehicle crankshaft too. Replace all three sensors and your problems are gone. You will notice that the old sensors have a step in them while the new modified ones dont, good luck
