I have a 96 saturn sl2 and i was driving and i came to a stop light and i was shaking badly i pulled over and everything seemed to be fine but i tried restarting the car and i would crank over but shake really bad, so i had it towed home and i thought it was the bottom motor mount so i replace that and it is still shaking bad but not as bad as it was before. what else could be the cause of the shaking its my only car for transportion.

First check the spark plugs. (color, burn pattern) next check for spark. Then check compression on all cylinders to see if they are equal.

How can i check compression to see if they are equal?

  • Pukaman Jan 13, 2014

You will have to purchase a compression guage or borrow one from a friend. I have had a few different types, the screw in type is the best. You should be able to tell one cylinder is low by the way the spark plug looks. The reason you need the compression guage is after you check the compression and find one low, you then need to add about a tablespoon of oil to that cylinder and check it again. If the compresion comes back up to normal then you know that the cylinder rings are having problems. If it does not, then it the problem is the valves.

If the rings are having problems it could be that they are carboned up and all you need is a little solvent and let it sit overnight. Sometimes they will break free.

One question, have you replaced the ECTS (Electronic Cooling Temperature Sensor)? These cause no end of different seemingly unrelated problems on Saturns. Peice is about ten bucks and is an easy install. Just search on youtube for a how-to video. Even if that's not the problem it is reccommended to replace this peice just the same as they ALL end up going bad at some point.

If that's not a fix, start pulling plugs. Check to see if they're correctly gapped and if they have any damage/corrosion. If you're running Platinum plugs, immediatly change to a copper plug as Platinums have no place in these motors. Most people have the best luck with NGK copper.

Check to make sure that your plug wires haven't been crossed. This sounds like a plug or wire issue most likely so it has to be in that family, if the plugs are good, wires good and not crossed, sensors are fine, then time to replace your coil packs. If you've replaced everything up to the coil packs then that is most likely the cause of your dillema.

SOURCE: The engine in my 96 saturn wagon shakes when it is put into gear, reverse or drive.

remove the belt and spin all of the pulleys by hand to make sure they all spin freely. the knocking noise is probebly a pulley locked up.

best idea would be to connect it to computer and read error codes.... that can give you idea in some cases what went wrong, or what is broken.... I bet, it will be some sensor ....

96 saturn sl2 running rough

check vacuum hoses, pcv valve etc. it seem this is not electrical related, it is more of air exchange if my term is correct, example is the hose from engine to air filter and so on check everything cuts, kinks, rubber tend to crack at age, or when soaked in oil this sort of thing.

Saturn sl2 sputters when i accelerate and check engine light came on when i kicked it down into passing gear, seems to idle a little low now seems to be getting worse

You'll need to get the trouble codes to see what is the problem. Many auto parts stores will pull the codes for free - I'd start there.

Myservice engine light came today rogh in idle at light rpms seem a little high this is a 98 saturn sl2 I think engine is a 1.9

the check engine light means that a code has been set. the code will reference a faulty system that must be diagnosed and repaired. sorry for the vagueness, but there are e gads of codes that can cause the rough idling

most aftermarket parts places will scan the car for free. this will give you an idea of where to start.

1997 saturn sl2 key is in start position, no ignition, lights are fine

I had this problem with my 99 SL2, it was the starter. I checked for codes and there weren't any. Take your starter to a place like Auto Zone where they can test it. Most likely they will find that it is bad.
