First turn of the key energize the car electrical circuits for some circuits radio ets. 2nd turn of the key energize the the starting cycle, when you turn the key to the third spring loaded start mode it completes the circuit to the starter solenoid which engages the starter and start the car, the spring in ignition return the key to ignition on.
Maybe you have a malfunction in the ignition on position. Dont have a large bunch of keys hanging in your ignition, it sings back and forth when the car is in the start mode and cause havoc to your ignition switch.

The brake lite switch is most likely stuck on, it is on the arm that goes to the brake pedal, it will have at least 2 wires in the connector to the switch.

SOURCE: I have a 97 geo prism with a gas leak
Where is the gas leak? At the back of the car, under the hood, or???
It could be a rusted gas line, a rusted gas tank, etc. You need to do some detective work to determine where the leak is. Do not park the car inside a garage. Fumes can build up and explode when starting the car or just turning on a light in the garage. Be careful not to cause a spark, or allow anyone to smoke nearby until you fix it.
